About The Position

In this position... The Electrified Propulsion Engineering Power Electronics Hardware Design Engineer will be responsible for the hardware design, implementation, and validation of non-motive power conversion modules (AC onboard chargers, DC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters). This position entails working collaboratively with Ford internal and external teams including Software, D&R, Validation, and power electronics suppliers to design / develop components that meets corporate requirements, specifications, and customer needs. The selected candidate will be part of a team that will drive future product development and deliver industry-first features in the growing field of vehicle electrification.

Requirements

  • Master or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of working experience in power converter hardware design and development
  • Deep understanding of various high-power conversion topologies (PFC, CLLC and DAB DC/DC etc.), including their operation principles and switching/commutation details.
  • Solid simulation skills using common tools, such as PSPICE, PLECS/Simulink.
  • Extensive experience in designing with WBG devices, gate drivers, magnetics, DSP/MCU and PMIC/SBC, and communication interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, design rules and CAD tools.
  • Direct production experience from start to finish of automotive power converters, including following the processes and meeting quality, safety, EMC, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Strong communicator, able to effectively present to technical audiences.
  • Team player working in a diverse group in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starting with solid follow-through and multitasking abilities; able to work with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for topology selection, circuit design and optimization of various power conversion modules, including bi-directional onboard chargers and DC/DC converters for all operating modes and conditions.
  • Select critical components including WBG MOSFETs, magnetics and capacitors for improved system performance, robustness, and costs
  • Work closely with systems, control, software, and test engineers on the team to plan, implement and validate the hardware design.
  • Ensure designs meet safety and regulatory standards for automotive systems
  • Work with power conversion module suppliers to ensure and help improve the robustness and performance of their hardware design.
  • Provide support to resolve customer concerns, investigate and troubleshoot system faults and errors.
  • Connect with focus groups and forums to stay at the forefront of technological advancements to keep the team abreast of the latest power conversion topologies and devices.
