About the position

The Product Owner, Laboratory Systems plays a critical role in shaping how sample data is captured, processed, and translated into high-quality results across GeneDx testing workflows. This role leads the development and optimization of internal lab systems—including LIMS, assay and robotic software, and assay QC tools—driving efficiency, compliance, and operational excellence from sample intake through data delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Understand Business domain knowledge and operational knowledge to support delivery of prioritized programs and projects within the GeneDx Product Pillars.
  • Own and prioritize product backlogs for internal and third-party applications—optimizing existing features, enabling new capabilities, and ensuring system alignment with operational goals, regulatory compliance, and user needs.
  • Lead discovery and requirements gathering with cross-functional stakeholders across Laboratory Operations, Clinical teams, Data Engineering, and Quality/Regulatory.
  • Partner with Engineering and cross-functional teams to design workflows and interfaces that are audit-ready, clinically accurate, optimized for efficiency and usability, and observable.
  • Define milestones, epics and stories on approved projects and determine delivery timelines based on scope, dependencies, and priorities.
  • Proactively Report on progress, timelines and roadblocks to stakeholders through written and oral presentations.
  • Create core product documentation including PRDs, annotated wireframes, workflow diagrams, UAT scripts, and performance dashboards.
  • Lead agile ceremonies including story writing, backlog grooming, sprint planning, stand-ups, demos, and retrospectives to drive alignment and unblock delivery.
  • Orchestrate operational work with innovation and improvement work priorities and proactively adjust timelines.
  • Define, track, and analyze KPIs related to operational performance, user engagement, and system reliability and report progress to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to deliver context-sensitive, automation-enabled tools (e.g., dynamic QC dashboards, sample storage and retrieval, assay recommendations).
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on sample and data movement across manual and automated workflows—spanning sample accessioning, assay processing, QC, bioinformatics, and downstream systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in product ownership, product management, or workflow/process optimization within a regulated, complex operations environment.
  • Experience of Software Engineering development practices, such as SDLC, SCRUM, AGILE.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or experience in clinical/diagnostic labs strongly preferred.
  • Strong systems thinking: ability to design and optimize multi-user workflows across digital and physical touchpoints.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory workflows, automation systems, LIMS platforms, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., CLIA, CAP, NYS, FDA).
  • Proven success partnering with cross-functional teams including Engineering, UX, Operations, QA/RA, and Medical.
  • Experience translating complex requirements into clear, actionable user stories and product specs.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies, iterative product delivery, and human-centered design principles.
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Mission-driven mindset and a sense of ownership for building systems that improve healthcare delivery.
