About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of Community Engagement and Principal Investigator, the Community Engagement Program Coordinator will be responsible for developing and maintaining community engagement programs, initiatives, and resources that advance the Center’s mission and goals. About the Center: The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) Center for Accelerating Excellence in Translational Science (AXIS) has focused on eliminating health disparities in the South Los Angeles community, particularly those related to cancer, cardiometabolic diseases, and HIV/AIDS. As an unexpected expansion in response to the needs of our local community, the entire CDU establishment also led community initiatives to improve local outcomes during the pandemic, including providing education and facilitating screening, prevention, care, and clinical trials.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Four-year college degree (B.A., B.S.) in Health Sciences. Experience in Business Administration, Public Administration, or Public Health is an advantage.
  • EXPERIENCE: At least 2 years or more years of experience working in an academic setting or institution with responsibility for coordinating educational programs and activities. At least 2 or more years of experience in scientific and programmatic grant development, writing, and submission of grant proposals and reports to federal, local, and private funding agencies. Experience in the coordination of staff and students, including experience working in conjunction with HR. Also strongly prefer experience working with diverse partners and cultural sensitivity. Experience with developing and communicating, in written and oral form, detailed and technical scientific and administrative program information to various audiences. Has experience developing evaluation metrics to assist the Supervisor in reviewing the effectiveness of program activities, recommending improvements, and assisting in executing recommendations. Has experience developing marketing/promotional information to increase visibility of the institution or program. Prefer experience articulating detailed or technical scientific information in a generally publicly acceptable and culturally appropriate manner. Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships in complex program/organizational settings involving heterogeneous constituents such as academic and clinical faculty, staff, students, and community partners from diverse backgrounds. Experience with interpreting operating policies and procedures and resolving minor discipline and other employee relations issues within an academic setting or institution.
  • SKILLS Demonstrated experience developing and executing community engagement strategy Proven ability to build relationships and partnerships with diverse groups Excellent oral and written communication skills Strong organizational and time-management skills Budget development and oversight experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Prefer basic/working knowledge of Spanish language. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain community engagement programs, initiatives, and resources that advance the Center’s mission and goals
  • Work with internal and external partners to identify opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing
  • Serve as a liaison between the Center and various communities, promoting positive relationships and open communication
  • Promote the Center’s research projects (Full, Pilot, and Supplements) to community physicians, health care providers, potential study candidates, community-based organizations, research organizations, the CDU community, and other locations or groups
  • Manage community engagement and outreach events and campaigns, including planning, logistics, budgeting, and execution of monthly and annual conferences.
  • Develop marketing and promotional materials for community engagement initiatives that include social media
  • Write grants and proposals to secure funding for community engagement programs
  • Train and supervise staff and volunteers working on community engagement projects (i.e., Clinical Trials Education)
  • Collect data and feedback from participants in community engagement programs to assess effectiveness and make necessary improvements
  • Keep abreast of trends and developments in the field of community engagement and share relevant information with staff and other stakeholders
  • Attend community meetings, health fairs, and events as needed to represent the Center
  • Provide administrative coordination of the Center’s Community Advisory Boards (Latinx & African American)
  • Perform administrative tasks related to community engagement program management, such as creating reports, PowerPoint presentations, and maintaining records
