About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Positions in this class provide and supervise programs for the rehabilitation of inmates in the prison system. Positions at this level are accountable for the development, implementation, and maintenance of total programs activities for inmates of the smaller prison facilities, or are accountable for development, implementation, and maintenance of one or more major and broad programs for inmates at a large facility or institution. The primary programs areas are inmate classification; correctional programs including work release, incentive wage, study release, educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Work involves considerable contact with community agencies to enrich programs, establish new programs, and to conduct work release investigations, if relevant. Positions monitor the effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities and may supervise subordinate staff. Positions are responsible for coordinating programs activities with custody and other facility staff. Reporting to the Associate Warden of Programs, this position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders I the prison system. This position responsibilities will include: Developing, implementing, and maintenance of total programs activities for offenders of the smaller prison facilities, or are accountable for development, implementation, and maintenance of one or more major and broad programs for offenders at a large facility or institution. Coordinating offender classification; correctional programs including work release, incentive wage, study release, home leave, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion and recreation, and correctional counseling. Contacting community agencies to enrich programs, establish new programs, and to conduct home leave and work release investigations. Monitoring effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities and may supervise subordinate staff. Coordinating programs activities with custody staff. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC08 Salary Range ($ 39,244 - $ 68,679.) State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result. About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW): Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7, 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 360 female offenders located in Black Mountain, NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories: Greenwood, Frye, Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4, 2021, the facility's name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of internal and/or external services available to offenders.
  • Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.
