As a Project Assistant (Biological Science Assistant) in Gold Beach, Oregon, you will conduct field surveys to assess the condition of stream habitat and the status of fish populations and distribution throughout Oregon. Some of the duties will include: Describing channel morphology and instream habitat characteristics. Assessing distribution and abundance of juvenile fish. Locating site with a map, compass and global positioning system (GPS) Keeping accurate and clear data records. Hiking into and along streams daily. (Walk 0.75 – 1.5 miles of stream daily 4 days/week) Working in hot, cold, rainy weather and over rough terrain. Occasional camping or backpacking in remote areas. Communicating with the public to gain access to private land and to explain monitoring activities. Working on a two-person crew on streams within a specific geographic area. Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience conducting field work in a range of environmental conditions including summer heat and winter cold
  • Field-based experience such as fish sampling, habitat surveys, snorkeling, hydrology or related activities
  • Experience collecting biological samples from fish and accurately recording field data
  • Experience communicating clearly and professionally with team members and the public
  • Experience working independently in the field, including managing one’s own schedule, determining safe and efficient stream access, and collecting data according to complex protocols.
  • Experience working independently in remote areas with limited supervision (surveyors will be able to contact a field supervisor by phone or email only once per week and be visited in the field only once every two to three weeks)
  • Anyone who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences
