This is a repost, all previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for an Engineer III position located in Forsyth County in the Division 9 Project Development Office. This position will serve as a Project Engineer in the Project Development Unit and assist division staff by coordinating the planning and design of Division managed transportation projects. Work includes oversight and review of the preparation of contract documents, engineering estimates, specifications, standard drawings, and special construction details as well as developing and implementing measures to control project costs. This position will track all aspects of each assigned project from conception to completion including project feasibility, planning, public involvement, project design, right-of way acquisition, environmental issues, budget and project letting to ensure timely delivery of projects and programs. This position will provide engineering and design guidance to departmental engineering staff and private engineering firms serving as a liaison between these firms and the Division and provide status reports of projects and funding sources to the Division Project Development Engineer and the Division Engineer on a regular basis. The successful applicant for this position must possess the ability to promote a safe work environment. Must be able to use engineering judgment while conducting engineering studies and preparing geometric designs. Ability to write contracts, specifications, special provisions and interpret policies, procedures and regulations. The selected applicant must have experience in reading and interpreting roadway and bridge construction plans and highway engineering calculations. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required. State of North Carolina registered Professional Engineer's License preferred by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with private engineering firms for review and approval of design plans
  • Knowledge of NCDOT programming, planning, scheduling and funding procedures
  • Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex projects
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience assimilating large amounts of data to properly plan, prioritize, track progress and monitor various projects and programs within the NCDOT
  • State of North Carolina registered Professional Engineer's License preferred by management.
