As NASA’s largest engineering solutions provider working together with NASA at centers across the United States. We are seeking a Summer 2026 Project Engineering Intern to support the development, testing, fabrication and mission operations planning for the Multi-layer Acoustics & Conductive-grid Sensor (MACS) Project which is building an orbital debris sensor system. The candidate will help define and develop the procedures, and processes to assemble the flight unit and perform system checks during and after the assembly. This person will be responsible for developing and executing processes for effectively executing system functions, coordinating mission operations rules, procedures, anomaly response, and systems monitoring to ensure effective coordination between the MACS engineering, science, and flight operations personnel. This is a temporary role not to exceed 12 weeks.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
  • Completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
  • Multi-disciplinary design analysis and optimization
  • Must be student enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering or engineering technology degree program.
  • Self-motivated, team player and adaptability to a dynamic environment and the ability to complete all assignments as required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and will be expected to effectively interact with customers and management at all levels.
  • Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings.
  • Ability to visualize and work with complex mechanical/electrical systems and work with others in problem solving as part of a team.
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in human spaceflight.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering or test engineering disciplines and products such as requirements development and tracking, conops, trade studies, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis software tools such as Matlab and/or programming tools such as Python.
  • Familiarity with test and measurement approaches common in university engineering labs (e.g. digital scales, inspection microscopes, multi-meters, etc.).
  • Aerospace or Mechanical engineering degree seeking student
  • Master's engineering degree seeking student.
  • Coursework in the following subjects: orbital dynamics, spacecraft or launch vehicle trajectories, spacecraft systems, spacecraft operations.
  • Experience with extra-curricular activities such as Cubesat, Rocket clubs, AIAA, etc

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of procedures for assembly, and systems verification
  • Develop operational procedures, rules, checklists, alarms for nominal and off-nominal mission operations
  • Prepare flight hardware for assembly procedures, and support assembly activities and integration of the flight unit.
  • Help document system performance, health, and system trending through repeated test series
  • Support analysis and resolution activities, including identification of root causes and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Ensure operations products (alarms, procedures, operational documentation) accurately reflect the capabilities and limitations of the MACS.
  • Support the MACS engineering development team on flight unit integration efforts
  • Coordinate and support the development of operations tools: command scripting, timeline tools, telemetry/telecommand systems, mission trending dashboards
