About The Position

We’re looking for an experienced Protection Engineer who thrives on solving complex system challenges and ensuring the safe, reliable performance of the power grid. In this role, you’ll dive deep into relay settings, coordination studies, and system modeling—leading the analysis, documentation, and implementation of protection strategies that meet rigorous NERC PRC standards. You’ll work hands‑on with industry‑leading tools like ASPEN, PSS/E, and PSLF to model primary and secondary systems, investigate disturbances, and develop data‑driven recommendations that strengthen system integrity. If you enjoy using advanced digital recorders, running intricate short‑circuit studies, and translating technical insights into clear reports and action plans, you’ll excel here. We’re seeking someone with strong technical expertise, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for staying ahead of evolving protection and control technologies. With your background in electrical engineering and at least five years of P&C experience, you’ll play a key role in evaluating relay operations, refining control logic, enhancing protection systems, and collaborating with manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and industry organizations such as IEEE and NPCC. This is an opportunity to bring your deep knowledge of relay communication, testing practices, and system performance analysis to a team that values innovation, precision, and continuous improvement. If you’re excited by the idea of elevating grid reliability and shaping modern protection strategies, we’d love to meet you.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years' experience relative to P&C engineering for generation and/or transmission systems
  • Expertise in the engineering of protective relay and control systems, the calculation of relay settings, the creation of relay control logic, and the analysis of relay operations for transmission / distribution substations
  • Knowledge of relay communications theory, testing practices and the maintenance of relay communications network infrastructure

Responsibilities

  • Review/analyze existing protective relay settings per NERC PRC standards to ensure proper relay coordination margin and recommending relay setting changes if required.
  • Document relay coordination in reports per NERC PRC standards.
  • Reviewing existing protective relay settings per NERC PRC standards to ensure proper relay coordination margin and recommending relay setting changes if required.
  • Model primary systems and secondary systems in power system simulation software platforms such as ASPEN, PSS/E, PSLF software.
  • Perform system disturbance analysis and recommending protective relaying system modifications and/or additions, if appropriate.
  • Reviewing and documenting existing protective relaying systems and recommending protection system improvements.
  • Interface with manufacturers, professional organizations, regulatory and standardizing bodies (i.e.: NPCC, IEEE, etc.) in order to maintain familiarity with and stay conversant with the requirements in the very broad area of power system protection and control.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art microprocessor-based digital transient recorders and integrated sequence-of-event recorders in complex monitoring and logging systems to provide the necessary information for system performance analysis.
  • Perform special short circuit studies and other complex calculations as required to establish relay settings utilizing sophisticated software analysis programs.
