About The Position

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Medical Division in the Personnel Bureau is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of all members of service. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the mental fitness, resilience, and well-being of uniformed and civilian members of the Department.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty; and four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in "1" above. However, all candidates must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Surgeon in the planning, development, and implementation of Departmental behavioral health projects and initiatives.
  • Supervise and provide clinical oversight to Department psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals.
  • Assess mental fitness for employment, duty status, and return-to-work determinations.
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and provide consultation on complex clinical and operational matters.
  • Lead and participate in trauma debriefings, critical incident stress management, and post-incident interventions.
  • Develop and deliver lectures, trainings, and educational programs on mental health, wellness, resilience, and stress management.
  • Provide expert guidance on policies, procedures, and best practices related to psychiatric and behavioral health services.
  • Foster a comprehensive behavioral health program that supports the overall well-being and readiness of Department personnel.
