About The Position

Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with BPHC standards and policies. Meets regularly with the Director of Public Safety and Director of Operations regarding aspects of the Departments daily operations, which may include without limitation personnel matters, staffing, and deployments. Assists the Director of Operations with supervision of the staff, including sergeants and officers, and ensures staff compliance with work rules, directives, and policies. Operates independently with discretion, use sound judgment with business acumen to make decisions affecting the Department and staff as it relates to program operations/services and BPHC policy. Answers alarms, investigates disturbances, and performs general security duties in accordance with. Department policy and procedure. Protects and safeguards BPHC property from fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry. Conducts periodic patrols and/or site-visits. Serves as shift supervisor as directed. Assists the Director of Public Safety and the Director of Operations with trainings, including but not limited to new hire training, field training officer program, and other required annual trainings, including use of force and deescalation. Makes and recommends management and personnel decisions as directed, including but not limited to promotion, transfer and assignment of staff, and imposition of discipline. Represents management in grievance and arbitration process and in collective bargaining as necessary. Attends regularly scheduled meetings and represents the department at meetings when needed. Performs administrative duties as directed, which may include reviewing and approving time off requests and other time related functions, and scheduling of daily assignments. Participates in hiring process for uniformed positions in Public Safety Department. Prepare reports as needed. Serves as a liaison to the Boston Police Department but not limited to other Law Enforcement Partners. Works to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must have at least five (5) years of full-time experience in police/public safety force or in work involving the protection or security of buildings, equipment or people as the major duty.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain Valid Class 3 Massachusetts Driver's license.
  • Sufficient written, computer literacy, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Must effectively communicate with administrators, managers, colleagues, clients, within the Boston Public Health Commission and with outside federal, state or local agencies.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the department’s operation.
  • Ability to maintain daily operations of the department and be on call required.
  • Professionally represent the Boston Public Health Commission & Public Safety Department with integrity.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
  • Commitment to health equity and racial/social justice issues.
