About The Position

Under the direction of the Street Superintendent, supervises, plans, directs, and oversees subordinate workers performing maintenance and repair of City-owned streets, alleys, right-of-ways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drainage systems, street signs, street sweeping, and tree trimming activities. Monitors work performance and assists in developing division objectives. This position will require some weekend and night work as necessitated by the city’s needs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED Equivalent and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, right-of-way, snow removal, including one year of supervisory or lead-level experience.
  • Ability to tolerate various temperatures and climates; moderate to heavy labor, including prolonged walking, standing, sitting, climbing, bending, crawling, lifting up to 50 lbs., for extended periods of time.
  • Must maintain the physical requirements to successfully pass the Function Capacity Evaluation as required for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a BS degree in Construction Technology, Business Administration, or a closely related field is desirable.
  • Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and participates in the work of subordinate employees, frequently split into crews responsible for the maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drainage systems, street signs, right-of-ways, street sweeping, and tree trimming activities.
  • Coordinates division programs to support special events such as parades, holiday festivals, and street fairs.
  • Assures proper safety procedures are followed, and safety standards are met; investigates accidents and injuries; initiates preventative measures.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of a variety of automated records, reports, work-orders and requisitions; prioritizes all work orders and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensures departmental policies and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain records and execute written work orders.
  • Reports the need for discipline of an employee to the Superintendent.
  • Complete required Job Performance Evaluations of employees under his/her supervision.
  • Fills in as Superintendent when the need arises.
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and record-keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, traffic signing, drainage control, and street sweeping.
  • Knowledge of Applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations as they relate to street issues and legal issues related to areas of responsibility, to include hazardous waste, air quality, and water issues.
  • Knowledge of surveying techniques and public works inspection practices.
  • Ability to keep detailed cost and job records.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting complicated construction, mechanical, electrical, and blueprints, and other related drawings.
  • Skill in making estimates and properly interpreting and making decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policy.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
