Summary of Responsibilities: The Quality Manager leads pre-production and post-production quality activities. This role will interface directly with the Naperville and China pre-production product development teams and post-production quality teams. The Quality Manager will lead a department of Quality Engineers and other quality related specialists. A portion of the department will take ownership of efforts in the pre-production product development team. This involves conversion of customer VOC’s (Voice of Customer) into technical, quantitative requirements to ensure end customer satisfaction, and alignment of those requirements with the product’s brand promise and warranty goals. Those activities include user research efforts to build requirements, product risk analysis, test plan review, test protocol development, and user field testing. The remaining portion of the department will focus on post-production quality. Post-production quality will leverage quality information streams to drive root cause analysis and corrective action activities. Possible tasks include warranty analysis, conducting quality continuous improvement (QCI) audits, aligning corrective action plans, determination of quality holds, and recommendation of product disposition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Quality related discipline or equivalent experience in Quality Management.
  • Minimum of 10 years of power tool or related consumer product experience.

  • Manufacturing knowledge in areas including assembly, mechanisms, metal and plastic forming, injection molding technologies, tooling, fixtures, and gauges
  • Comprehensive understanding of GD&T and SPC (statistical process control)
  • Familiar with quality tools and procedures
  • Strong statistical capability and Design of Experiments knowledge
  • Use of fishbones/Ishikawa, pareto charts, 8-D, control plans, etc.
  • Advance knowledge of Reliability Life Data Analysis
  • Excellent computer literacy; Microsoft Office; Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Tool industry knowledge and new product development experience preferred.
  • CAD skills beneficial
  • Minitab or Matlab preferred.
  • Bilingual in Mandarin a plus.
  • CQE (certified quality engineer) advantageous

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the user research team to understand applications, and voice of the customer to develop requirements
  • Support draft test plan development and test plan updates during the early phase of product development by collaborating with global R&D and quality teams (China)
  • Support the development and approval of test plans for changes in suppliers, manufacturing locations, or cost reductions
  • Work with product development teams to draft, validate, and implement new test procedures
  • Work with product development teams to resolve issues with procedures, results, and targets
  • Perform postmortems on tested tools to determine failure modes, root causes, and possible solutions
  • Organize and lead field test meetings and communicate findings and conclusions to product development team
  • Lead planning, identify relevant projects, and timing of field testing for new development projects
  • Support design & development of new test fixtures for quality and validate performance of those fixtures
  • Support investigations into customer complaints and returns
  • Coordinate outsourcing of tasks (ex.; metrology, metallurgy, 3rd party lab testing)
  • Work with cross-functional Quality and R&D teams on implementation of quality improvements
  • Manage product tear downs and reporting
  • Present state of Quality in regular reporting format across numerous brands and product categories
  • Leverage statistical methods to analyze data to drive hypotheses and conclusions
  • Review and approve test report conclusions
  • Review risk management reports related to new product development (FMEA or similar) and provide feedback to product development team
  • Organize and execute rework activities and determine acceptance criteria of reworked products
  • Build work instructions and time studies for rework projects
  • Create cost analysis of post-production quality issues to drive disposition (rework, scrap, etc.)
  • Refine process development and continuous improvement activities related to the above responsibilities
  • Assess quality team members’ performance against these responsibilities and provide feedback when necessary
