About The Position

Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer capacity in accordance with NRC and KDHE regulations to provide oversight of all regulatory compliance and safety aspects of Radiation Safety for the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Reviews, evaluates, and analyzes work environments, programs, and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by radioactive agents. Conducts inspections and enforce adherence to KUMC policies and procedures as well as laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals. Serves on the Radiation Safety Committee and other committees as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Must be qualified for acceptance by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) to serve as Radiation Safety Officer for the institution.
  • 7 years of radiation safety experience in a university, hospital, or research laboratory setting. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Master’s degree in ihealth physics or related degree.
  • Professional certification in relevant area/s: National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NNRPT); American Board of Health Physics (ABHP); Health Physics Technician certification (40 hours), HAZWOPER certification (40 hours); Radiation Safety Officer certification (40 hours); Hazardous Materials Handling certification.
  • Previous work experience in a highly regulated environment which requires consistent accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Radiation Safety Program, which includes investigating overexposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposals, misadministration, other deviations from approved radiation safety practice and implement corrective actions as necessary; write and implement policies, procedures and training for the Radiation Safety Program as well as supervise other radiation safety staff members.
  • Function as an active, voting member of the KUMC Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). Prepare, maintain, present, and follow up on all agenda items, meeting minutes, and other documents for each monthly RSC meeting. Coordinate concerns between the RSC and investigators to solve protocol issues identified by the RSC. Ensure information is provided to the investigator and requested changes are made per committee recommendations. Send approval documents to investigator.
  • Function as Chair of the Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC). Prepare, maintain, present and follow-up on all agenda items, meeting minutes and other documents for each RDRC meeting.
  • Serve on the JHRS Committee with an active role in completing radiation use assessments and approving study protocols.
  • Oversee the radioactive waste management per federal, state, and institutional regulations. May include, but is not limited to, tasks such as collecting and processing waste, maintaining supplies, maintaining documentation, preparing waste and documentation for on-site and off-site disposal.
  • Coordinate the Radiation Inspection program which includes: Conducting regular inspections in research labs. Surveying radioactive storage locations. Surveying common areas to ensure radiation contamination has not occurred.
  • Animal or Human Research protocol review responsibilities include the following: Reviewing submissions to ensure compliance and institutional requirements with respect to Radiation Safety; determining readiness for committee review; communicating with submitters (such as the KUMC Research Institute, centers/institutes, investigators, research staff etc.) regarding regulatory requirements and committee's review. Working closely with the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), KUMC Research Institute and the University of Kansas Health System Radiation Safety Officer so that research projects are received, processed, disseminated, and retained according to university requirements, in a timely fashion.
  • Oversee the radiation dosimetry program.
  • Oversees the safe use of, compliance, registration, and certification of all KUMC owned X-ray devices.
  • Participate in required training which includes, but is not limited to: Annual Radiation Safety training. Annual Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogen training. Annual Personal Protective Equipment training. Annual Hazard Communication training. An introductory training related to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act within 30 days of hire. This training shall include, but is not limited to, online training, review of the University’s Contingency Plan and on-the-job training.   • Serve as a key member of the University’s Environment Health & Safety office. This includes collaborating with other EHS employees to develop and implement EHS programs to resolve compliance issues and regularly update the EHS Director regarding status of programs and any identified deficiencies.
  • Serve as a resource for investigators, the KUMC Research Institute, centers/institutes, and others regarding regulations and KUMC policies outside of the radiation safety program.
  • Emergency Management: Serve as an alternative EHS representative on the Crisis Response Group.
