About The Position

The Rocking Chair Ranch is located near Philipsburg, MT and consists of 7,230 acres. The ranch will support 350 Animal Units of grazing and also produces irrigated hay. Agricultural components of the property are leased to a third party. The manager will be responsible for oversight of the property and its assets and all operations within. The manager will protect, preserve and enhance the property, including owners, guests and employees. Communication and collaboration with the principals and understanding their needs will be critical. Establishing a relationship of support and trust with any employees will be key. The manager will be fiscally responsible while maintaining a high-level of care with a focus on range and cropland management and maximization of environmental resources. Having an open mind and the ability to adapt to change are necessary.

Requirements

  • Must have proven management and leadership skills, high energy and self-esteem, effective written and oral communication skills, flexibility, and be a self-starter.
  • Must have demonstrated experience and knowledge in managing land in similar climatic conditions and with similar operating requirements and financials, maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Experience with forest management; interest in preserving the natural landscape and habitat; thoughtful consideration of environmental resources.
  • Willing to assist the owners, owners’ families, and guests as may be requested when they are on the ranch and ensure that all residences are in attractive, clean, working condition.
  • Ability to manage hunting and fishing activities for owners and guests.
  • Experience with supervising, training, hiring and dismissing employees.
  • An individual with foresight who can anticipate issues, problems, and owners’ needs.
  • Maintain a positive environment of high standards, strong work ethics and safe work practices.
  • Instill a sense of trust and integrity.
  • Know and understand how to handle owner, guest, and employee concerns.
  • Long-term intent.
  • Willing to work non-traditional hours.
  • A nonsmoker in good health, physically able to fulfill all the requirements of the job.
  • Certified in basic first aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of fire, disaster, and safety procedures.
  • Computer competence is required.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and upkeep of all improvements and infrastructure.
  • Maintenance schedules and upkeep of all vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Manage the private ag lease to improve soil health and benefit wildlife and fisheries habitat.
  • Stay abreast of any developments concerning owned water rights.
  • Coordinate recreational and agricultural operations to ensure that land and asset usage is optimized.
  • Develop and implement improvement plans for wildlife habitat, crops, and weed control that maximize production and profitability without diminishing the aesthetic and recreational values of the ranch.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and dismiss all seasonal and full-time employees.
  • Work with the owners and affiliated entities to create and execute an annual business plan and budget for the ranch.
  • Provide insight and recommendations regarding infrastructure improvement and construction. Also responsible for oversight of construction projects.
  • Responsible for involvement in the financial oversight of the ranch. This includes, but is not limited to, monthly activity and budget reports as well as annual inventory reports. Additionally, the manager will collaborate with the owner to prepare a yearly budget for the ranch.
  • Responsible for limiting and/or preventing trespassing on the ranch and securing buildings to prevent theft.
  • Understand the conservation easement on a portion of the ranch and ensure terms are not violated.
  • Meet regularly with the owner, the owner’s representatives, and key ranch personnel to review guest needs and day-to-day activities.
  • Assist owners and guests in recreational activities, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
  • Ensure owner’s residences and facilities are prepared before visits by ensuring structures are clean, stocked, and guest ready.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality relative to the ranch and the owners.
  • Complete all other duties and tasks as assigned.
