About The Position

The Reader Services Intern is an opportunity, funded by the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Science Initiative to support students aspiring to work in museums and provide them with hands on experience in a museum setting with professionals in Library Science. This is an 8-10 week part-time opportunity, perfect for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in Library Science or the Humanities. This position offers hands on experience with special collections, public services, and digital research tools, and is designed to support skill development in an academic library setting. The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Tentative Internship Dates: April 6, 2026 - May 29, 2026. S/he/they will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.

Requirements

  • Must be a current university student or recent graduate (1 year max)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow handling and retrieval procedures carefully
  • Ability to work in a quiet or near‑quiet reading room environment
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as with library staff
  • Basic computer skills; willingness to learn new tools such as LibGuides
  • Comfort working with fragile materials under guidance and training

  • Some library, retail or other comparable experience helpful but not required

Responsibilities

  • Retrieve pre-1850 and other semi-rare materials from the library’s main reading room and central basement under staff supervision for relocation to storage1850 and other semirare materials from the library’s main reading room and central basement under staff supervision1850 and other semirare materials from the library’s main reading room and central basement under staff supervision
  • Assist with organizing, updating, and maintaining research guides (LibGuides)
  • Provide support in the library’s reading rooms, including assisting staff and patrons as needed
  • Create a LibGuide on an assigned or approved topic as part of a learning project
  • Participate in Internship programming led by the Internship Coordinator
  • Create and present a final project based on the work done during the 12-week internship
  • May perform other related duties as assigned
