About The Position

Under the supervision of one or more attorneys, the paralegal will perform a variety of legal duties for the assigned department. Assignments will include both billable and non‑billable matters. The work performed requires knowledge of basic legal concepts, principles, real estate, land use and finance related terminology and practices, use of legal reference material, and law office procedures. Skills required include the ability to reason logically, analyze situations, recommend an effective course of action, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, draft documents, manage multiple assignments/projects to completion, obtain and report information received through research and investigation.

Requirements

  • Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships with firm attorneys, opposing counsel, clients, firm management, peers and outside vendors, such as title companies and engineering firms
  • Must be proactive, detail-oriented, organized and demonstrate initiative on a consistent basis
  • Must have ability to multi-task, problem solve and organize
  • Must be available to work overtime including evenings and weekends, as necessary
  • Must be flexible, demonstrating the ability to adapt easily to a fast-paced working environment
  • Must be able to keep client matters confidential
  • Experience in a large law firm environment or extensive real estate experience preferred
  • Must have a professional and pleasant demeanor when communicating with clients, attorneys and third parties associated with transactions or land use work
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Real Estate paralegal in a law firm
  • Paralegal certificate preferred
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies or related field a plus
  • Individual in this position will provide additional assistance and support as directed by their supervisor.
  • Job may require occasional travel to the firm’s other offices and for external events.

  • Repetitive movement (i.e. heavy computer/keyboard use).
  • May require occasional light lifting (files, copy paper, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Research, review and draft real estate documents, such as Deeds, Leases, Purchase Agreements, Assignments, Easements, Promissory Notes, etc.
  • Knowledge/understanding of real estate documents and execution and recording compliance
  • Communicate directly with attorneys, clients, outside counsel and vendors on active matters as necessary to resolve issues and keep projects on track
  • Knowledge of ordering federal, state and local searches, such as UCCs, Judgments, Bankruptcy, Tax Liens, etc.
  • Prepare and organize closing documents for execution and circulation
  • Attend and participate in closings
  • Track, follow-up and record post-closing documents
  • Prepare and organize Land Use applications
  • Prepare exhibits for Land Use meetings and hearings
  • Obtain/search land records, property information and history from various County’s on-line records
  • Obtain property records and materials from various municipalities under the Open Records regulations, such as zoning and land development documents
  • Knowledge/understanding of researching municipal Zoning and Land Development Ordinances
  • Knowledge/understanding land title work
  • Knowledge/understanding of engineered plans, such as legal descriptions, zoning charts, municipal compliance and recording compliance
  • Communicate with various federal and state departments, such as Dept of Revenue, Dept of Labor and Industry, SDAT, IRS, SEC, and various County offices including Recorder of Deeds, Assessment and GIS/Mapping
  • Possess and maintain extensive understanding of Real Estate Paralegal work
  • Provide cross-office support
  • Ability to work standard business hours and overtime to support the practice group
