About The Position

The Receiving Inspector is responsible for inspecting incoming materials, components, and documentation to ensure compliance with purchase orders, engineering drawings, applicable codes, and company quality standards. Positioned within the Logistics Department or Quality Department, this role serves as the first gate in the material flow process, ensuring only conforming materials are released for storage or production. The Receiving Inspector shall verify the following: Material Test Reports chemical composition has met the ASME Code Requirements Country of origin has met the customer requirements Mark filler materials as received and reviewed

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret:
  • Engineering drawings and specifications
  • Purchase orders and packing lists
  • Material specifications (ASTM, ASME, customer requirements)
  • Proficiency with basic inspection tools (tape measure, calipers, micrometers, gauges).
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in structural steel, pressure vessels, piping, or heavy manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with material traceability and heat number control.
  • Experience working with AWS/ASME- code based systems.
  • Experience with inventory management systems.
  • Forklift experience preferred (certification a plus).

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections of incoming raw materials, fabricated components, and purchased parts.
  • Verify material identification, heat numbers, sizes, quantities, and physical condition against purchase orders, packing lists, and drawings.
  • Confirm materials meet applicable specifications (ASTM, ASME, customer requirements, etc.).
  • Clearly identify, segregate, and tag nonconforming material to prevent unintended use.
  • Work with logistics to create material kits segregated by job number and palletized for production use per job number
  • Review and verify Mill Test Reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance (COCs), and supplier documentation.
  • Ensure traceability requirements are met prior to material release.
  • Accurately record inspection results in receiving and quality records.
  • Maintain material traceability from receipt through release to production.
  • Authorize the release of conforming materials into inventory.
  • Place materials on hold when requirements are not met.
  • Coordinate with Logistics, Quality, Purchasing, Document Control, and Engineering to resolve discrepancies.
  • Initiate Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) for materials that do not meet requirements.
  • Communicate inspection results and material status to the Logistics Manager and Quality team.
  • Support supplier corrective actions as required.
  • Follow established Quality Management System (QMS) and Logistics procedures.
  • Support internal and external audits related to receiving, material control, and traceability.
  • Ensure inspection tools and gauges used are within calibration.
  • Promote a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement within logistics operations.
