About The Position

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) provides peer support services, based on an individualized, recovery-focused service philosophy that allows individuals the opportunity to learn to manage their own recovery and advocacy process. The PRSS will work to enhance the development of natural supports, coping skills, and other skills necessary to function as independently as possible in the community, including, but not limited to assisting re-entry into the community after incarceration, a hospitalization, or other institutional settings. The PRSS serves as an advocate and provides information and peer support for consumers seeking services in the Women in Recovery aftercare program. The PRSS performs a wide range of tasks to assist consumers in regaining control of their lives and recovery processes. Must possess the skills to maintain a high level of professionalism, ethics, and interactions with all ODMHSAS stakeholders.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Specialized experience as a recipient of mental health services and experience as a paid or volunteer staff working with adults with mental illness.
  • Ability to work with the public, ability to maintain an effective working relationship with agency employees, ability to maintain a professional manner at all times, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must obtain and carry a cellular phone during working hours.
  • Requires possession of a Driver's License and use of a personal automobile to travel to locations other than the primary office.
  • Some use of agency vehicles may be required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations is preferred.
  • Ability to document activities, write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manual.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with colleagues, clients, clients’ families, the general public, and third-party payer personnel.

  • All CCBHC required training courses must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • High School diploma or GED Minimum one-year participation in local or national consumer advocacy or knowledge in the area of mental health recovery.
  • Must possess a driver’s license and use of a personal automobile for travel.
  • Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification (if you do not already have, you will obtain after hire)
  • Case Manager I Certification (to be completed within 60 days of eligibility)
  • Wellness Coach Certification (if you do not already have, you will obtain after hire)
  • Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record (required for travel and client transportation)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations is preferred.
  • Strong preference may be given to individuals who have experience with the Department of Corrections or similar organizations.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who are current or former consumers of mental health services.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in daily organizational meetings and treatment team meetings with a multidisciplinary team to utilize a team-based care approach when working with clients.
  • Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures.
  • Demonstrate understanding of various best-practice treatment models to work with individuals with Severe Mental Illness, Co-occurring disorders, and trauma.
  • Understand the wrap-around focus of CCBHC services, assisting clients in multiple life areas through multi-disciplinary teamwork and community referral.
  • Obtain and maintain professional licenses and certifications required for the position through attending required trainings, tracking CEU’s, and submitting renewals in a timely manner.
  • Be familiar with CCBHC standards, understand the history, philosophy, structure and purpose of CCBHC and demonstrate fidelity to the model.
  • Effectively complete and submit all clinical documentation with established agency timelines.
  • Provide peer counseling and support, drawing on common experiences as a peer, to validate clients’ experiences and to provide guidance and encouragement to clients to take responsibility and actively participate in their own recovery.
  • Serve as a mentor to clients to promote hope and empowerment.
  • Provide expertise and consultation from a mental health consumer perspective to the entire team concerning clients’ experiences.
  • Understand that family, social, and community supports are an essential part of a client’s recovery and integrate these systems into treatment.
  • Under immediate to general supervision, provide peer support services and serve as an advocate to consumers in emergency, outpatient, or inpatient settings to assist consumers in regaining control of their lives and recovery processes.
  • Assist consumers in articulating their personal goals for recovery, determining the objectives needed to obtain their recovery goals, and obtaining services that suit their recovery needs.
  • Promote wellness, empowerment self-care, and self-advocacy; teach consumers how to practice positive self-talk and combat negative self-talk and fears; and demonstrate problem-solving and techniques to consumers.
  • Teach consumers to identify and utilize community and natural supports in their recovery.
  • Facilitate peer support groups.
  • Provide outreach to continually engage clients in ongoing services and creatively work with clients to decrease barriers to accessing care.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competencies and adhere to the values and core principles of CCBHCs. At a minimum they include: Coordination & Collaboration; Accessible & Available; Evidence-Based; Person-Centered Care; Family-Driven Care; Recovery Oriented; Trauma Informed; and Data-Driven.
  • All CCBHC required training courses must be completed within in 30 days of hire.
  • CCBHC clinical staff will utilize telehealth options when needed to improve a client’s health by permitting two-way, real-time interactive communication between the client and the practitioner at the distant site. This electronic communication means the use of interactive telecommunications equipment that includes, at a minimum, audio and video equipment.
  • Part of an adult CCBHC team with a focus on consumers also experiencing complex medical concerns. Consumers in this population will need more in-depth health and wellness services and coordination.
  • Serve adult female clients, aged 18 and older who have graduated or exited the Women in Recovery program and have previously faced Tulsa County Felony charges, were ineligible for other court diversion options, were diagnosed with a primary substance use disorder, and may have co-occurring mental health disorder.
  • Combination of office and/or field-based services with potential transportation of clients using agency or personal vehicles as determined by needs of consumers and/or program.
  • Teach and mentor the value of every individual’s recovery experience individually and in a group setting
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies
  • Proactively engage clients in services o Possess communication skills to teach new concepts and ideas to others
  • Assist in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups
  • Support clients in using a WRAP – Wellness Recovery Action Plan or Psychiatric Advanced Directive
  • Assist in continuing to build social skills in the community that will enhance the quality of life
  • Support the development of natural support systems
  • Possess knowledge about various mental health settings and community resources (i.e. local shelter, housing, food pantry, vocational resources, and other homeless resources) Provide services in-person or via telehealth platforms
  • Meets clients where they are in terms of current mental health symptoms and treatment preferences
  • Meets clients where they are in the community, including Continuing Care events, private homes, or outdoors, promoting confidentiality in all settings
  • Coordinates mindfulness and yoga practices as requested or needed per client.
  • Coordinates outreach and participation in recovery-oriented meetings on-site and off-site including AA, NA.
