About the position

For more than 50 years, First Choice Community Healthcare has provided access to high quality primary medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare to the underserved populations of the Mid-Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico. Today, we operate five (5) Community Health Centers and one (1) school-based clinic. We are currently recruiting for a Referral Specialist I to join our team and assist in fulfilling our organizations mission, which is to improve the health, life skills and wellbeing of all members of the communities we serve. Our health centers maintain an open-door policy, providing treatment regardless of an individual’s income or insurance coverage. As a non-profit organization, First Choice is a vital community resource in Central New Mexico. Not only does our organization provide the highest quality, comprehensive medical services, but we also address our patients’ emotional, social, and cultural needs.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains ongoing tracking of and appropriate documentation regarding the status of provider-directed patient referrals, to include system sufficient to report data and status to others.
  • Helps ensure complete and accurate patient registration information, to include demographic data and current health insurance information.
  • Communicates with patients, providers and other staff regarding the status of referrals.
  • May contact insurance companies to confirm that prior approval requirements are met and/or to provide needed patient information (e.g., health history, diagnosis, prognosis, provider visit documentation).
  • May schedule patient referral appointment, to include provision and dispensation of necessary paperwork and related patient instructions.
  • Attends and contributes to meetings as needed or required.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least one year of medical office or other related healthcare experience.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish-speaking skills highly preferred.
  • Experience in a multiple provider setting and experience with electronic health records and healthcare practice management systems preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Medical assisting skills/certification/experience is highly preferred.
  • CPR certification required within 6 months of hire.
