About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Bulky Waste Section of the Solid Waste Management Division of the Utilities Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor.  An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. A Refuse Collector III serves as the leader of a refuse disposal crew, averaging two to four employees, and is responsible for ensuring safe vehicle/equipment use and satisfactory work performance by crewmembers. Workers in this classification must use knowledge and skills previously acquired on the job. Essential job functions include: acting as a working supervisor for a refuse disposal crew; coaching and instructing crew members on proper procedures for loading and unloading trash, including large and/or unusual items; collecting and transporting trash to approved landfills for proper disposal; communicating with supervisors, crew members, and citizens to resolve complaints or complete special dispatches; completing written reports and informing supervisors regarding the safety of crew members, exceptions to procedures, unusual incidents, injuries, accidents, equipment malfunctions, etc.; cleaning and maintaining vehicles; performing routine maintenance; monitoring trash-collection routes and schedules to ensure proper service; and performing related duties as required and assigned.  Work is subject to periodic review by a supervisor based on inspection, daily activity reports, and citizen satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Skill in operating assigned vehicles, such as rear-loader and side-loader refuse compactor trucks; and auxiliary attachments, such as refuse compactors, hydraulic lifts, etc.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).
