The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Development Consultant within the Western States Region. The Senior Development Consultant is responsible for providing strategic consultation to the Western States region and market leadership on the effective cultivation, stewardship, and engagement of volunteer leaders and donors to advance mission impact and revenue growth. Develops, implements, and executes targeted strategies, programs, and outreach initiatives to achieve organizational goals. Serves as a liaison and subject matter expert, communicating and equipping staff on best practices in volunteer and donor cultivation while ensuring consistent adoption and execution across assigned markets. This hybrid position is flexible to locations within the Western States region (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington) with cost-effective access to travel across the territory served and convenient proximity to a major airport. Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience
  • University/College degree or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated track record in fundraising with expertise in volunteer leadership and donor stewardship and cultivation
  • Experience managing, cultivating, and stewarding high-level leaders at the C-suite level
  • Demonstrated track record in strategic planning, execution and evaluation
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to influence a shared vision across audiences
  • Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop collaborative working relationships internally and externally.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to develop strategic relationships.
  • Strong skills in process management, team building, conflict resolution, adaptability and priority management.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the AEVP, serve as the staff lead in partnering with the Region’s executive team, volunteer board leadership, and select volunteers to steward a portfolio of current and prospective donors and volunteers, driving revenue and engagement outcomes.
  • Support the cultivation of volunteer and donor relationships and engagement of volunteer leadership to champion the fundraising success of markets/campaigns through their personal and corporate giving and influencing the involvement and giving of others.
  • Ensure the advancement and continuity of relationships and the quality of the donor experience on an ongoing basis.
  • Identify, evaluate, and advance opportunities surfaced by volunteers, internal partners, and external stakeholders that align with Association and Region goals.
  • Develop strategies, messaging, and tools to strengthen donor and volunteer recognition and engagement and maintain a structured pipeline of volunteer leadership opportunities across the organization.
  • Optimize collaboration with Mission Advancement, Corporate Relations, Health Strategies, and other internal departments to elevate donor and volunteer recognition, stewardship, and engagement.
  • Facilitate strategic planning sessions with assigned markets, ensuring consistent adoption of best practices, adherence to timelines, and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Conduct market‑specific needs assessments and identify opportunities to add the greatest value to volunteer and donor development.
  • Analyze trends and develop strategies to strengthen volunteer leadership and engagement, leveraging metrics, segmentation, performance insights, and coaching.
  • Partner with management and cross-functional teams to champion excellence in stewardship and engagement practices.
  • Equip staff with effective tools, protocols, resources, and guidance to enhance their ability to cultivate volunteers and donors.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of standardized processes and best-in-class engagement approaches.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope and responsibility of the job level and family.
