About The Position

Provides direct and/or indirect nursing care for individual patients.   Communicates with and on behalf of the patients and coordinates patient care and discharge plan with the interdisciplinary team.  Organizes those aspects of nursing care for which she/he is accountable for.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a state approved nursing program.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa.
  • Successful completion of BCLS within 3 months of employment and ACLS and PALS within the first year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses each patient on admission and determines appropriate nursing diagnosis and begins discharge planning.
  • Develops, implements, and keeps current an individualized nursing plan of care.
  • Participates in the daily interdisciplinary team meeting to promote an integrated health care plan and discharge plan.
  • Evaluates patient responses to nursing interventions and documents appropriately.
  • Prioritizes, plans, and organizes the delivery of standard nursing care to use time and resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Delegates aspects of care to peers and ancillary nursing personnel, consistent with their level of education and expertise to meet patient needs.
  • Maintains accountability for own care and care delegated to others to assure adherence to ethical and legal standards.
  • Recognizes changes in patient condition and notifies physician.
  • Plans, promotes, and participates in patient education and rehabilitation.
  • Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, quality improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/nursing committees and other related activities.
  • Complies with hospital and nursing service policies.
  • Assists in the orientation and development of nursing personnel and students.
  • Demonstrates willingness to support staffing and scheduling needs.
  • Performs functions other than described above due to extenuating circumstances.
  • Trauma Alert Duties: Reports to primary ED nurse. Obtains supplies and assists with procedures and performs other tasks as directed by the primary nurse.
  • Maintains skills for computerization of documentation and medication delivery.
