About The Position

The Abdominal Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital is a 25-bed unit specializing in the post-operative and medical care of patients with diverse abdominal and gynecological needs. From bariatric surgeries like gastric bypass and gastric sleeve to hysterectomies and other general surgical procedures, this unit is at the forefront of surgical recovery. Patients also come to the unit with complex medical conditions such as small bowel obstructions (SBO), gynecological oncology issues, and those requiring advanced therapies like NG tubes, TPN, and electrolyte replacement. The care team is highly skilled in managing wound vacs, surgical drains, and ostomies, with the added capability of remote telemetry monitoring. The unit fosters a supportive and flexible work environment, offering 12-hour shifts with self-scheduling. Nurses work within a 6-week schedule that incorporates weekend and holiday rotations, ensuring a healthy balance between work and personal life. New nurses are welcomed with a 6-week competency-based orientation guided by an experienced preceptor. This training provides hands-on experience and education tailored to each nurse's unique needs, building expertise in abdominal and gynecological care, remote telemetry, and post-operative recovery protocols. Staffing ratios are designed to maintain high-quality care: Day Shifts: 1:4-5; Night Shifts: 1:5-6. Welcoming both experienced RNs and new graduates, the Abdominal Unit provides an exciting and challenging environment where nurses can grow professionally while making a meaningful difference in patients’ lives.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • New hires required to obtain BSN within 5 years of hire.
  • BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers)
  • Registered Nurse
  • Knowledge, judgment, and skills derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to meet complex health care needs a various stages of the life cycle
  • RNs with more than 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time acute care experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document initial and ongoing patient/family assessments.
  • Develop, communicate, and update individualized plans of care, including discharge planning.
  • Provide safe, patient‑centered care that supports autonomy, dignity, and diversity.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies and take appropriate clinical action.
  • Carry out physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete assigned care and documentation within required timeframes.
  • Administer medications/treatments safely and perform technical skills per policy.
  • Evaluate patient responses and revise the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks appropriately to other team members.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and support training/education of staff and students.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge and adhere to organizational and departmental standards.
  • Function in relief charge/resource roles as requested.
