Responsibilities

  • Work within the scope of a licensed RN in TN
  • Endoscopy Admissions, Procedure Room, and Recovery Room
  • Operation and maintenance of Endoscopy Equipment
  • Provides individualized and specialized nursing care to patients in the Center in accordance with physician’s orders, recognized nursing techniques, legal aspects of current nurse practice within the state and the Center’s policies and procedures.
  • Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics.
  • Demonstrates initiative, insight, and judgment in the decision-making process.
  • Performs the technical procedures required by the patient needs/assignment without causing harm.
  • Pre-procedure nurse: Greets patients and verifies patient name orients them to changing area and container for patient belongings.
  • Escorts patient to stretcher and verifies stretcher is in the locked position and assist patient onto the stretcher.
  • Places side rails in the raised position.
  • Assess patient for allergies and document results.
  • Obtain baseline vital signs, and confirm ordered lab work has been done.
  • Report any abnormal values of vital signs or lab work to the physician.
  • Starts and maintains IV per prescribed physician order.
  • Administer and document pre-operative medications as prescribed by a physician.
  • Verify history and physical is current according to policy.
  • Complete and verify all pre-procedures orders have been completed and documented.
  • Executes informed consent prior to administration of sedation.
  • Ensures informed signed consent completed prior to administration of sedation
  • Preparing for and/or assist with endoscopy procedures performed in the Center.
  • Ensures each patient receiving conscious sedation has a peripheral venous access.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies to include: Clean/ disinfect/reprocess all endoscopes according to center policy and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Clean disinfect/sterilize endoscopic accessories between patients.
  • Operates and troubleshoots endoscopy and patient monitoring equipment.
  • Anticipates and assists with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and medications.
  • Initiates IV’s and administers IV sedation under the direction of a physician
  • Assess the patient’s tolerance for conscious sedation during the procedure.
  • Initiates emergency measures as indicated
  • Maintains cleanliness in the Procedure Room.
  • Provides emotional support and reassurance to the patient during the procedure.
  • Assesses, evaluates and accurately records the patient’s post-anesthesia status and provides supportive care during the post-procedure phase.
  • Maintains accurate and complete medical records.
  • Discontinues IV per physician order
  • Initiates emergency measures as indicated
  • Initiates patient teaching and discussion of discharge instructions and documentation of patient’s understanding
  • Documents name of the patient’s driver and patient’s ambulatory status.
  • Evaluates and completes an assessment of the patient needs to provide supportive care before, during and after procedures and maintains accurate and complete records.
  • Maintains/completes appropriate documentation before, during and after the procedure which includes actions and interventions, all patient symptoms including pain, outcomes, and responses and/or assessment data consistent with the policy and procedures.
  • Accountable for the administration of drugs, IV procedures and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures in a safe and accurate manner.
  • Communicates pertinent information to co-workers.
  • Provides a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury.
  • Investigates and intervenes in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to supervisor and documents same.
  • Knowledge of preparation and administration of medications used during procedures and emergencies.
  • Identify significant cardiac arrhythmia per ACLS protocol.
  • Maintains crash cart supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment.
  • Operates and troubleshoots patient monitoring equipment.
  • Anticipates and assists with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and medications.
  • Provides guidance to other staff members assisting with orientation.
  • Consults with the appropriate supervisor or physicians as needed.
  • Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibility for own professional growth and development.
  • Participates in in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Completes annual required in-services on time.
  • Completes annually required competency check-offs on time.
  • Accepts direction from supervisor or physicians and adheres to established routines.
  • Maintains patient’s rights to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors/family or patient.
  • Maintains HIPAA policy and Identity Theft Protection.
  • Acts as an advocate for the patient to ensure that the patient rights, values, customs and spiritual beliefs are not compromised.
  • Maintains flexibility and performs other duties as required.
  • Supervises non-licensed staff in the Pre-Procedure/Post-Procedure area and assigns tasks based on education and training.
  • Maintains traffic control and cleanliness in Pre-Procedure/Post-Procedure area.
  • Communicates patient status and other pertinent information to coworkers and physicians as needed.
  • Provides emotional support and reassurance to patient and family during pre-procedure and recovery stay.
  • Functions within the legal limits of nursing practice.
  • Complete incident reports as appropriate.
  • Refers situations beyond ability or function to the proper person.
  • Reports errors of commission/omission.
  • Participates in PI program as directed.
  • Assists in Code Cart Maintenance and Defibrillator Checks.
  • Assists in completion of the logbook.
  • Knowledge of infection control measures within the Center, including equipment, PPE, the center itself, waste disposal and patient protection.
  • Knowledge of compliance with the Center’s policy and procedure manual.
