Reliability Engineer Intern Overview Join the Reliability Engineering team at Lumentum and gain hands-on experience supporting the development of automated test systems used to evaluate optical devices for AI infrastructure applications. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware, software, and product reliability. As a Reliability Engineer Intern, you will assist in building lab test setups and developing automation scripts used to characterize device performance under stress conditions. You will work closely with experienced engineers to support real-world qualification and reliability programs while developing practical engineering skills in both laboratory and data-driven environments.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master's degree program in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field
  • Strong hands-on aptitude with the ability to work effectively in a laboratory environment
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills, with the ability to interpret data and draw meaningful conclusions
  • Ability to work independently while managing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Programming experience in Python, or similar languages
  • Basic understanding of semiconductor devices and device characterization concepts
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation and measurement equipment
  • Prior internship, co-op, academic lab research, or experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis tools such as JMP or similar software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint

Responsibilities

  • Follow and uphold ESD safety protocols while working with sensitive optoelectronic devices and laboratory equipment
  • Shadow package technicians, test technicians, and reliability engineers to gain exposure to device assembly, screening, and qualification processes
  • Assist in operating and maintaining characterization equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and source measure units (SMUs)
  • Support the optimization and documentation of reliability test procedures to improve efficiency, repeatability, and data quality
  • Compile, review, and summarize test data; generate reports to communicate findings to the engineering team
  • Assist in performing Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R) evaluations to assess measurement system performance
  • Conduct basic failure analysis activities, including reverse bias current measurements, optical microscope inspection, near-infrared imaging, and electroluminescence imaging
  • Help construct or modify lab fixtures and test setups, including soldering, prototyping, and equipment integration tasks
  • Troubleshoot device and test equipment issues and provide feedback or recommendations for corrective actions
