Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital is seeking a part-time Relief Admin Nursing Supervisor. This position oversees the delivery of quality patient care following Cottage Health and department-specific policies and procedures, as well as directing and evaluating the care delivery of others to ensure continuity and quality. MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES / SPECIFIC JOB COMPETENCIES 1. General - Due to the size and scope of Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, this position is not regularly required on the day shift Monday through Friday, thus requiring different work hours on weekdays vs. weekends, including holiday coverage. The position is also expected to assume various tasks that would otherwise be performed by support staff in larger facilities. Examples include but are not limited to locating and retrieving patient medical records, providing meal period relief for staff, securing medications from the after-hours medication location, transporting patients, and coordination of after-hours surgical services. 2. Administrative/Management Functions - Responsible for planning and directing the overall management of nursing services during assigned shifts and functions as the administrative support and resource person for all hospital services. a) Acts as a resource to and collaborates with all departments, Nursing Managers, and nursing staff in the allocation of staff, admissions, and other resources. b) Acts as liaison between health care providers, physicians, patients, and families. c) Handles media inquiries and works collaboratively with all public service representatives. d) Acts as the initial incident commander in the event of a disaster until other resources become available. e) Supports the coordination, communication and collaboration of patient placement and management through frequent rounding to all patient care areas. 3. Quality Management/Quality of Care - Demonstrates knowledge of quality management systems and assists the organization in achievement of its’ quality management programs. a) Demonstrates accurate knowledge of relevant laws, standards, and regulations as well as system, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures affecting decisions and interpretations. b) Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. c) Ensures delivery of quality care through serving as a resource and mentor. d) Maintains confidentiality of employee and patient information consistent with established guidelines, policies, and procedures. Uses discretion when discussing patient, employee, and organizational information. e) Provides suggestions to improve overall quality and day-to-day operations. f) Investigates any unusual occurrences or untoward incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors; makes appropriate notifications and participates in follow-up as necessary. 4. Leadership Behaviors - Enhances teamwork through leadership, guidance, and direction toward a common goal. Demonstrates consistent professional attitude and behaviors. Practices the principles of effective communication and promotes the same in others. Acts as an agent of change in a positive and professional manner to assist staff in meeting the challenges of the health care system. m) Manages multiple demands and demonstrates flexibility in providing leadership, including other departments as required. Assists with a variety of management functions as assigned. n) Attends meetings as required and acts as a liaison to other institutions in order to facilitate quality patient care. o) In collaboration with the critical care nurse, provider, and bedside staff effectively facilitates the coordination of emergency situations including but not limited to patient transfer. 5. Keeps self and others informed of changes throughout the department, hospital, and health care industry. Is an active participant in problem solving and is responsible for maintaining professional competence and keeping informed of changes. a) Maintains professional competence. Reviews professional literature participates in pertinent education programs and seminars, and/or other appropriate learning experiences. Active participant in staff and committee meetings. b) Keeps informed of changes by attending staff and committee meetings, educational programs, and by reviewing emails, departmental postings and other communications. c) Establishes personal goals and reviews annually. d) Orients new employees, conducts an on-going assessment of their learning needs and evaluates performance.
