About The Position

Interested in driving data science innovation as part of an industry-leading team? E Source is growing! We’re looking for a geospatial and remote-sensing data scientist to collaborate on the development of ground-breaking data science applications that change the way utilities understand and manage their grid. We tackle challenging projects such as: Analyzing aerial and satellite imagery and LiDAR and topography data Forecasting the impact of severe weather on the performance and operations of massive utility networks Using remote sensing to predict tree presence, height, and productivity For these and other projects we use a combination of machine-learning models, inference-based statistics, and remote-sensing methods. Our ideal candidate has significant experience conducting remote sensing and geospatial analytics in either Python, R, or PostGIS. Geospatial programming experience and familiarity with packages such as arcpy, GDAL, OGR, shapely, geopandas, sf, and terra for raster and vector analytics is a prerequisite. As with any successful analytics project, it all starts with the data, so you should have experience extracting and transforming data from a variety of spatial formats and merging complex data sources that vary spatially and temporally. We use a variety of remote-sensing data sources such as satellite and aerial imagery, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and LiDAR. Familiarity with one or more of these remote-sensing products and related applications is a plus. Experience with data-driven models using remotely sensed weather observations, and/or vegetation and wildfire ecology data is also beneficial. Data science and statistical modelling is a plus but not a requirement. Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCS) is also a bonus. A little about E Source E Source combines industry-leading research, data science, and consulting to help utilities make and implement better data-driven decisions that positively impact their customers, their bottom line, and our planet. Headquartered in Boulder, CO, we have teams across the US and Canada. Learn more at www.esource.com. How you'll help: To be a good fit for E Source Data Science, you should thrive in team-based, collaborative projects from conception to release and be eager to support customer communication and collaboration by participating in workshops and project-update meetings. The ability to simplify complex analyses into understandable concepts that are applicable to utility management and operations staff is highly desired. Ultimately, your impactful work will help enhance utilities decision-making around improved electric reliability and work efficiency in both the transmission and distribution sectors. Our team has diverse applied backgrounds in ecology, meteorology, remote sensing, hydrology, and image analytics. We’re a remotely based, collaborative team pushing the envelope of spatial analytics with all types of geospatial data. The ideal candidate has a BS, MS, or PhD in geography, ecology, or remote sensing. A background in an applied field that complements remote-sensing expertise is an asset (such as an applied discipline–specific expertise with a geospatial skill set). You should have a track record of efficiently conducting remote-sensing projects either academically or professionally over at least a two- (junior) or five-year period (senior).
