About The Position

Changes and repairs tires and tubes for various types of automotive and diesel-powered automotive equipment; services and lubricates automotive vehicles and other motorized equipment; and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and one (1) year of specialized work experience.
• Qualifying Specialized Work Experience: Work experience as a mechanic helper, service station attendant, or in a similar occupation which involved changing and repairing of truck tires and lubricating of automotive or other mechanical equipment.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent) and other licenses or certificates as required of the position.
• Applicants will be required to qualify on a written examination.

Responsibilities

• Changes and repairs tires and tubes for a wide variety of motorized equipment
• Removes tires from rims
• Operates tire changing and dismantling machines and uses various hand tools
• Keeps an inventory of tires and maintains records of sizes and locations
• Orders new or recapped tires
• Maintains stock levels
• Inspects and fills transmission, differential, and rear axle housings with proper lubricant
• Uses a hand operated or a compressed air-operated grease gun to inject grease on various points on the chassis and motor
• Checks and replaces defective grease nipples
• Fills bearing cups with grease
• Drains and refills crankcase
• Checks and replaces oil filter cartridges
• Checks and refills battery water and brake fluid
• Operates gasoline and oil pumps and issues gasoline and oil
• Completes gasoline issue slips
• Cleans windshield
• Assists mechanics and mechanic helpers in dismantling and assembling engines
• Cleans engine parts using prescribed solvent
• Obtains parts from storeroom or outside vendors
• Guides or drives vehicles over grease pit or to repair area
• Drives a light truck and makes tire repair trips to the field
• Maintains working area in a clean and safe condition
• Performs other related duties.
