About The Position

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), a recognized leader and innovator in public health and mental hygiene services nationally and internationally, seeks a dynamic Reporting Analyst o join its challenging, fast-paced division of Finance. The Division of Finance has central responsibility and authority for policy analysis, program development, performance tracking and improvement, financial management, resource maximization, and technical assistance. Finance helps to ensure that programs and administrative operations have the information, analysis, funding and technical capacity to deliver critical services effectively and meet DOHMH’s objectives. Finance positions require analytic, interpersonal communications and problem-solving skills. Opportunities for advancement exist both within the Bureau and throughout the Department. The selected candidate for this position under the direction of the Financial Systems Manager and with wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment is responsible for leveraging data analysis and research for public health initiatives to inform decision-making and resource allocation. This role involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of health and financial data to identify trends, evaluate public health program effectiveness, and drive evidence-based decisions. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, expertise in data visualization tools, and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Programming: Proficiency in Python, or R for building data pipelines and automation.
  • Database Systems: Strong SQL skills for querying and managing data within relational databases (e.g., MSSQL).
  • ETL/ELT: Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) or Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) pipelines for data integration.
  • Data Warehousing: Understanding of building and maintaining structured data repositories (warehouses).
  • Data Visualization: Proficiency in tools like Power BI to create interactive reports and dashboards.
  • Data Analysis: Ability to extract insights from data using statistical methods and identify trends.
  • Communication: Clearly conveying technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • SQL Proficiency: Writing complex SQL queries to extract and aggregate data for reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze public health data from electronic health records, billing systems, and other relevant sources.
  • Develop and implement research standards to ensure high-quality and reproducible research.
  • Stay up-to-date on latest methodologies in data analysis and research.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations summarizing research findings on data relevant to city public health initiatives.
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for department leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Utilize data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI) to create interactive dashboards and reports that effectively communicate complex data findings.
  • Develop data-driven insights and recommendations to inform decision-making by agency leadership.
  • Coordinate with multiple teams to manage shared resources and ensure efficient project workflows.
  • Manage ad-hoc requests related to health data systems from internal or external parties.
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests for health and financial data from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity through rigorous data cleaning and validation processes.
