About The Position

This is a paid, full-time temporary internship lasting approximately 10 weeks between May and August 2026, based on student’s availability At Surmodics Services and Technologies , our mission is to deliver leading coating solutions that enhance medical device performance and support improved surgical procedure outcomes. As a Research and Development Intern , you will work alongside experienced scientists and engineers while gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative laboratory environment. The Research and Development Intern supports the R&D team by conducting testing on medical device coatings, analyzing testing results, and contributing ideas for process improvement. The intern will be supervised by the Director of R&D and Innovation.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or a related science field
  • Completion of at least sophomore-year coursework
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • At least two years of college-level chemistry laboratory experience
  • Able to work full time (40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship
  • Reliable transportation to and from the work location
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as high attention to detail
  • Must be able to endure the physical demands of the position which include repetitive lifting, standing for long periods of time, and wearing required PPE while demonstrating safe work practices
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship

Responsibilities

  • Perform coating testing and related measurement activities
  • Evaluate test results and identify opportunities for process enhancement
  • Assess medical device performance
  • Assist with sample builds and testing of designated coatings
  • Summarize results in reports and oral presentations
