A Brief Overview Responsible for the conduct of research. Establishes goals, objectives, standards of performance, and develops policies/procedures. Responsible for overall daily operations to assure advancement of ethical and scientifically meritorious research, which will ultimately develop state-of-the-art treatments, provide improved health care, and reduce health care costs.

  • Doctorate (PHD)
  • Doctoral degree or equivalent with related postdoctoral experience or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and directs an active research program in their area of scientific specialty.
  • Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained.
  • Assigns and reviews work of subordinates.
  • Plans experimental protocols.
  • Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Reviews and analyzes resulting research data.
  • Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data.
  • Plans and supervises training of research associates and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Procures external funding, from grants and other sources, to maintain an active, independent research program.
  • Develops and manages study budgets.
  • Publishes in the form of articles in peer reviewed journals, books, chapters, review articles, and abstracts in this area of expertise. (Public disclosure of research results should be done with discretion regarding potentially patentable technologies and should not be done until proper intellectual property protection is in place in the form of patents or continuations.).
  • Maintains membership in professional societies, attending and actively participating in regular meetings (presenting papers or posters, participating in or organizing workshops, seminars, symposia, etc. – using discretion with regards to intellectual property issues).
  • Gives presentations at research seminars and participates in research-oriented journal clubs.
  • Serves on committees relevant to research.
  • Promotes the development and exposure of research efforts in the community.
  • Attracts and supervises graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, and/or undergraduate students in relevant research projects.
