About The Position

Works under minimal supervision to provide responsible technical assistance in performance of assignments requiring basic knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of science. This position is identified to support a research laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology, led by Dr. Boyuan Wang. The Wang Lab combines synthetic chemistry and biophysics approaches to elucidate mechanisms underlying signal transduction in bacteria and mammalian cells. The RTII will be under direct supervision of Dr. Wang and to perform experiments in the field of molecular biology, protein chemistry and biochemistry. This will include making measurements and recording data, which will be used in reports and publications. The RTII will additionally assist with lab organization including safety compliance, waste disposal, supply ordering and receiving, reagent maintenance, as well as participating in regular laboratory meetings and events. Experimental techniques to be conducted will include: General chemistry: solution preparation at given solute concentrations and pH. DNA technology: plasmid extraction; PCR; sub-cloning, agarose gel electrophoresis. Protein biochemistry: expression and purification of recombinant proteins; polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Microbiology: growth media preparation; growth and selection in solid and liquid media. Solid-phase peptide synthesis: operation and maintenance of an automated peptide synthesizer and HPLC-MS, TFA cleavage and work-up; Protein chemistry: protein ligation, conjugation and refolding. The RTII will receive training from Dr. Wang and senior lab members for all above-listed techniques and is expected to master them within three months since the first day of his/her employment. Once this is achieved, we offer flexibility regarding how the RTII participate our research, from joining existing projects to starting a new project of their own. All three Wang Lab RTII alumni left with authorships in peer-reviewed publications and admissions to PhD or MD programs. Ideal candidate will have solid knowledge basis from major coursework and effective communication skills. Two or more year committment highly recommended.
