About The Position

A Research Technologist I position is available at Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) working with Dr. Richard Dortch in the Division of Neuroimaging Research. Our team develops and applies advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to better understand neurological disease and recovery including peripheral nerve injury neurodegeneration and aging-related brain disorders. This position will focus on computational image analysis and quantitative processing of MRI datasets from both clinical and preclinical studies. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists clinicians and trainees to develop analysis pipelines process imaging datasets and contribute to translational neuroimaging research projects. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in quantitative imaging biomedical data science and translational neuroscience research particularly those considering future graduate or medical training. As a Research Tech, you will perform standard laboratory procedures with some independence, under the general supervision of a PI or Research Technician. Your contributions are vital for efficient lab operations. Every day you will execute experimental protocols, collect/record data, and maintain lab equipment. You may also perform complex procedures and provide guidance to students. To be successful in this role, you will possess a strong foundation in lab techniques, meticulous attention to detail, and work effectively independently and collaboratively. Reliability, safety adherence, and a willingness to learn are key. Performs experiments and analysis of data with minimal mentoring. May be asked to make original contributions to research by writing, presenting at meetings, assisting with grant applications. Presents periodic project updates to department mentor and staff and if appropriate to a national meeting and/or for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Maintains accurate record of experiments, develops comprehensive computer skills for database searching, data acquisition, and data entry. Adheres to and is familiar with the policies and safety practices of the hospital, attends all required in-services regarding biohazard, infectious, and safety issues. Learns techniques necessary to conduct research in the basic sciences with a faculty mentor(s). Capable of developing a hypothesis, design experiments to test that hypothesis, and implement new approaches to research investigations.

Requirements

  • Qualified applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering neuroscience physics computer science or a related scientific field.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Experience with scientific programming or data analysis (e.g. Python MATLAB R or similar)
  • Interest in neuroimaging medical imaging or computational neuroscience
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MRI analysis tools (FSL ANTs SPM MRtrix or similar) or image processing workflows is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze MRI datasets using established quantitative imaging pipelines and computational tools.
  • Perform image preprocessing quality control segmentation and quantitative analysis of neuroimaging data.
  • Develop and maintain scripts or workflows for data processing and visualization.
  • Manage and organize imaging datasets and associated metadata within research databases.
  • Summarize and report experimental results including preparation of figures and data summaries.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of analysis procedures and research findings.
  • Collaborate with research staff clinicians and trainees to support ongoing neuroimaging studies.
  • Assist with preparation of scientific presentations manuscripts and grant-related materials.
  • Participate in research meetings and provide updates on project progress.
  • Contribute to development and refinement of analysis methods for emerging imaging techniques.
