About The Position

Position Highlights: RN Lactation Consultant – Per Diem Position: Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant – Per Diem Location: Arlington Heights, IL Per Diem Level 1, 32-72 hours per 6-week schedule Hours: Monday-Friday, 0800-1630 (variable), rotation of Saturday coverage Required Travel: no What you will do: Serves as a consultant to the inpatient units when difficulties with a breastfeeding dyad are beyond the knowledge or training of a staff nurse. Consults, develops and implements breastfeeding procedures including follow-up evaluations for breastfeeding patients and assessments of pregnant patients referred by the hospital staff, physician or physician's office staff. Serves as a liaison between the community and NWCH providing ongoing expertise, education and support to groups and individuals. Provides a communication link between the hospital and physician's office to assure coordination of patient care and maintains communication with physicians concerning patients experiencing breastfeeding problems. Works with the appropriate shared governance councils to update policies, procedures and documentation relating to the breastfeeding dyad.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an Associate’s degree, or diploma from an accredited school of nursing required. BSN preferred
  • Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required or obtained within one year of hire
  • BLS from the American Heart Association
  • Current professional Nursing Licensure in the State of IL required
  • A minimum of three years of experience working with both mothers and newborns.
  • The verbal communication skills necessary to effectively work with patients, nursing staff, and physicians.
  • The written communication skills necessary to provide good documentation and to prepare educational material.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients and other members of the health care team.
  • Presentation skills necessary to effectively teach prenatal classes and to do in-service programs for health care providers.
  • Organizational skills necessary to work independently and to develop effective educational programs.
  • Experience in patient teaching and group leadership dynamics.
