A registered professional nurse responsible for direct and/or indirect care of the patient. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the Neonatal ICU. The RN in NICU must have knowledge and skill in caring for the sick neonate regardless of gestational age and the use of equipment/supplies associated with that care. The RN in the NICU must have skills in caring for the needs of the immediate family members, be familiar with newborn care, as well as familiar with neonatal resuscitation and be able to care for infant in transition or postpartum phase. The RN in the NICU must have the ability to assess patients and consistently re-evaluate and prioritize based on fluctuation of volume and acuity; recognize emergent situations and delivery of prompt, appropriate action based on the neonatal patients needs; provide care for all neonatal patients and ongoing education to the parents of patients admitted to the Neonatal ICU requiring treatment; select, develop, and evaluate plan of care; and ability to administer pharmacological drugs as ordered, perform procedures and operate equipment necessary for patient care as assigned.
