About The Position

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Routing & Dispatch Coordinator leads the daily operations of Routing and Dispatch, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and seamless transportation operations. This position requires expertise in district transportation procedures, confidentiality, and managing multiple priorities while fostering positive labor relations and a collaborative work environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in school district transportation operations or related field, specifically dispatching and routing, with at least three (3) years experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Certificate of Completion of the OSPI/CWU Pupil Transportation Management Program or be currently enrolled in the program.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervision, and team management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and employee training.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in routing/dispatch and transportation software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and district systems.
  • Knowledge of pupil transportation safety standards, laws, and policies, including special education requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Skilled in fostering productive labor relations and navigating employee performance concerns.
  • Adaptability in shifting priorities and responding to emergent situations.
  • Culturally responsive and respectful of diverse individuals and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and independent decision-making.
  • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, and removal of air brake restriction
  • Current and valid medical examiner's certificate or ability to obtain within three (3) months.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates.
  • Certification in reasonable suspicion determination (or ability to obtain one within 30 days).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Routing/Dispatch and Operations Clerk staff to ensure efficient workload distribution, compliance, and professional development.
  • Oversee routing, dispatch, and timekeeping operations to maintain service continuity and route efficiency.
  • Monitor and approve staff leave, ensuring adequate coverage for uninterrupted transportation services.
  • Respond to operational issues and emergencies using sound judgment to ensure safety and minimal disruption.
  • Develop and maintain internal audits and routing systems to ensure efficient, fiscally sound operations.
  • Manage route postings, awards, re-bid boards, and field/athletic trip scheduling to optimize resource use.
  • Coordinate summer routing and monitor road conditions to adjust routes as needed.
  • Serve as liaison with schools, departments, and external agencies for routing and dispatch coordination.
  • Maintain routing and dispatch software; troubleshoot and support system reliability.
  • Collaborate with city, county, and district planners on developments affecting transportation.
  • Use routing software to research, design, analyze, update, and implement boundary and routing changes.
  • Coordinate with the shop and drivers during bus breakdowns and ensure equipment readiness.
  • Assist with reporting requirements, including the STARS report.
  • Support recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and labor contract administration, including investigations and grievances.
  • Maintain and secure transportation records and prepare required reports, ensuring confidentiality where needed.
  • Represent the department on district and external committees and leadership teams.
  • Foster positive relationships and effective communication with students, parents, and staff. Resolve conflict efficiently.
  • Utilize technology for communication, managing, planning, presentations, and training.
  • Conduct inclement weather inspections and make safety recommendations.
  • Attend staff and professional meetings; provide reports and data as requested; perform additional duties as assigned.
  • May be required to drive a school bus as needed.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
