About The Position

This position works under direction & requires considerable knowledge of employee safety & health practices and inspection practices & procedures. • Coordinates, monitors, evaluates and plans safety and health programs for institution and prevention of hazardous conditions, fire prevention, Americans with Disability (ADA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), health standards, sanitation. • Conducts safety and health inspections and initiates corrective measures. • Participates in health and safety meetings and task forces. • Advises appropriate individuals on health and safety issues. • Monitors local institution policies and regulations, guidelines, agency policies and administrative regulations and safety standards recommended by American Correctional Association and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Codes. • Advises institution administrators and staff regarding methods and alternatives of compliance to laws and regulations related to health and safety policies, medical and mental health policies and public law 91-596, OSHA and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sections of Ohio Public Employees Risk Reduction Program (PERRP), staff & incarcerated persons accidents, vehicle accidents, safety & fire prevention to ensure all employees & incarcerated persons are provided a safe work & living environment. • Conducts training programs for employees. • Assures compliance with various safety rules, regulations and laws (e.g. ADA accommodation for both staff and incarcerated persons, American Correctional Association (ACA), OSHA, NFPA, Ohio Administrative Code (OAC)) • Investigates, reviews and analyzes employee accidents, unusual incidents and worker's compensation claims. • Prepares, receives and analyzes reports of safety inspections by regulatory agencies to determine institution compliance and makes recommendations to improve compliance. • Prepares safety and health reports. • Serves as a liaison with Operation Support Center (OSC) Safety and Health Administrator & internal management auditor. • Represents institution at conferences and meetings. Training and Development: Must obtain a Servsafe certification and thereafter re-new certification as required per policy.

Requirements

  • 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in fire & occupational safety & health education &/or inspection
  • 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in federal & state laws pertaining to industrial & occupational safety & health
  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in statistics
  • 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations
  • 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing principles & techniques
  • valid driver's license, except in Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, must provide own transportation for travel & required automobile insurance coverage pursuant to Section 4509.51 of Revised Code as needed.
  • completion of undergraduate core program in natural sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology)
  • 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in safety & health inspection practices & procedures & federal & state laws pertaining to industrial & occupational safety & health
