Family Medical Leave Act Equal Employment Opportunity Equal Employment Opportunity Supplement Employee Polygraph Protection Act CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION: Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Safety Officer serves as a non-sworn civilian member of the Georgetown Police Department. The Safety Officer provides traffic and crowd control, responds to traffic incidents, enforces non-moving violations, and supports public safety operations to improve departmental efficiency and enhance community service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D) required.
  • General understanding of traffic safety and local parking ordinances.
  • Familiarity with city geography and traffic flow.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate emergency lights and equipment responsibly.
  • Remain calm and professional during high-pressure situations.
  • Maintain a calm and composed demeanor when interacting with citizens.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and testify in court as required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Subject to shift work, 24-hour call-back, holiday and weekend duty.
  • Subject to random drug testing after employment.
  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license required.
  • Completion of Kentucky Law Enforcement Counsel-certified 120-hour training program.
  • Ongoing in-service or specialized training as required.
  • Must be available for variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Subject to 24-hour call-back in emergencies.
  • Must be capable of standing for long durations and directing traffic.
  • Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequent walking, bending, and exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Must operate automobiles in emergency situations.
  • All employees of the City shall be and remain drug and alcohol free at all times when working for the City, or engages in activity to that work.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to traffic-related calls for service that do not require intervention of a sworn officer.
  • Direct traffic at collision scenes, emergencies, and special events.
  • Investigate non-fatal traffic collisions.
  • Issue citations for non-moving violations and impound illegally parked vehicles.
  • Prepare accurate reports and maintain required documentation.
  • Assist with emergency and disaster response scenes as directed.
  • Appear for hearings and court trials related to parking citations and code violations.
  • Support traffic safety and community education programs.
  • Operate city-owned vehicles, including use in emergency mode (with lights and siren).
  • Preform related work as assigned.
