About The Position

The Facility Safety Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure healthcare environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This role combines security operations, emergency response, visitor management, and safety program support, requiring a balance of authority, compassion, and professionalism. The Safety Officer plays a critical frontline role in incident response, de-escalation, access control, and proactive risk identification while promoting a culture of safety throughout the facility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Strong understanding of workplace health and safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal de-escalation and customer service abilities.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills for investigations and risk assessments.
  • Excellent observation and organizational skills, including record and program management.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive in high-stress situations.
  • Physical capability to walk, stand for extended periods, and perform potential physical interventions when required.
  • Knowledge of hospital layout, policies, and emergency procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Specialized training in crisis intervention or managing agitated individuals preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely patrol hospital buildings, grounds, and parking lots to identify hazards, suspicious activity, and policy violations.
  • Monitor entrances and exits, screen visitors, control access to restricted areas, and verify authorized personnel.
  • Operate and monitor surveillance cameras and alarm systems to detect and respond to incidents.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for visitors, proactively and professionally approaching unauthorized individuals.
  • Assist with visitor management, including screening and escorting visitors after hours.
  • Safeguard hospital property, equipment, and confidential information.
  • Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, disasters, and other facility codes, coordinating with internal teams and external law enforcement or emergency services as needed.
  • De-escalate conflicts involving agitated patients or visitors using verbal intervention and crisis management techniques.
  • Address incidents such as theft or vandalism and enforce hospital policies appropriately.
  • Remain calm and act swiftly during emergencies, providing leadership and support until situations are resolved.
  • Document observations, incidents, investigations, and completed patrols accurately and thoroughly.
  • Develop and update safety manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and emergency evacuation plans in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (including OSHA).
  • Investigate accidents, injuries, and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain safety data and prepare reports for management, ensuring regulatory compliance and minimizing organizational risk.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, ensuring staff understand evacuation routes and response roles.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through communication, initiatives, and recognition of safe behaviors.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns for employees.
  • Educate staff on safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and emergency response procedures.
  • Provide directions and assistance to visitors and staff.
  • Offer escorts when needed and maintain a professional, courteous, and compassionate presence at all times.
