About The Position

Safety and health resource for facility and subcontractor personnel working in a variety of industrial fields associated with ship repair. The areas include on board sea going vessels and ships, industrial shops, dry-docks, etc. Ensuring compliance with established regulations by Federal OSHA, Cal/OSHA, NAVSEA Standard Items, and Maritime rules.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma, GED equivalent, or greater educational diplomacy (preferred)
  • Must be able to speak and understand Basic English.
  • OSHA 10 HR Maritime Certified.
  • Completed or in the process of completing courses in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Computer experience necessary especially Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Maritime knowledge.
  • Good communication skills, ability to teach large groups, and interact with various people on various levels.
  • For E-verify and contract security purposes (including ship access lists), all employees MUST present a valid export document. Acceptable documents are U.S. Birth Certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, Passport, Passport Card and Permanent Resident Card.

Nice To Haves

  • Must have a minimum of 1-2 years of ship repair experience (preferred)
  • Prior Military Experience is a plus.
  • Certified in Basic First Aid and CPR is a plus.
  • Certified Shipyard Competent Person

Responsibilities

  • Daily survey and inspection of a variety of working environments and sites. Ensuring compliance with promulgated safety and health regulations, as well as company policies and procedures. Facilitating correction of hazards and infractions found or ceasing operations until properly corrected.
  • Company representative. Continuous interaction with customer (US Navy, SWRMC, etc.), company employees, subcontractors, vendors, Federal and California OSHA Compliance Officers and visitors to the facility and other locations.
  • Safety orientation and training of employees, subcontractors and ship’s force / crew. Areas of training include, but are not limited to: company injury and illness prevention plan, safe work habits and attitudes, confined space entry, personal fall arrest systems, hazardous communications, lock-out / tag-out, etc.
  • Administrative duties. Knowledge and skills of computer use and programs using Microsoft Windows and Office, especially Word and Excel. Maintain several required databases. Maintain, audit, collect and research Material Safety Data Sheets and library. Research safety and health issues for concerns and gang box topics. Archiving, report writing and maintaining departmental files for ships, subcontractors, etc. Ensure department is properly supplied and maintained.
  • Must adhere to a promote ALL company safety policies. Wear all required PPE when in Production areas and promote a clean and safe work environment.
  • Populate and maintain department data bases, archiving, report writing, maintaining files, etc.
  • Conducting investigations in all areas as to cause, corrective actions, and ways of prevention, writing reports for such incidents and distributing.
  • Maintain equipment and tools required for the job including testing, calibrations and repairs. Equipment includes respirators, rescue gear, meters and monitors, cameras, etc. Further responsibilities also include auditing the maintenance of facility equipment, etc.
  • Ship Yard Competent Person. Ensure compliance with Certified Marine Chemists direction pertaining to the National Fire Protection Association code of regulations concerning confined spaces and hot work on board ships. Including the testing and entry of confined spaces, documentation, maintaining required equipment and annual rectification.
  • Ability to utilize PAI responsibilities and instruct Entry Level Safety Technicians to initiate hot work if applicable and instruct to initiate all associated work on any assignment directed by safety supervisors.
  • Industrial Hygiene Practices. Perform testing in various environments and locations for, but not limited to, noise, emissions, illumination, safe work practices, etc. Collect, prepare and send out samples for laboratory analysis including, but not limited to heavy metals, PCB’s etc. Retrieving, interpreting, relaying and maintaining results. Ensuring proper working environments are established and maintained.
  • Confined Space Rescue member-Trained as a member of a confined space rescue team. Ability to respond with basic knowledge off all associated rescue equipment and basic first aid/CPR tools.
