About The Position

Under the supervision of the Sanitation Services Supervisor, the Sanitation Equipment Operator is responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste material. The employee in this position operates a solid waste collection vehicle along scheduled pick-up routes and performs maintenance on related equipment. This employee must obtain a class B CDL within six months of employment; hiring incentive may be available for those who currently possess a valid CDL. The Sanitation Equipment Operator ensures compliance with city ordinances on solid waste disposal at the pick-up point.

Requirements

  • No experience required.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational experience required.
  • Possession of a class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement required. Will be required to obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training, ISO 100, 200, and 700. Additional education or certification as approved or determined by the department head could result in a regular stipend or per-hour increase to employees’ salary.
  • The ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to efficiently operate a calculator, camera, electronic tablet, computer, computer keyboard, cell phone, measuring devices, and other related equipment. Must have the ability to learn industry software as needed. Knowledge of solid waste equipment and collection routes. General knowledge of hazardous materials. Ability to operate heavy truck, hydraulic compactor, grapple boom truck, and other related equipment. Ability to use a variety of hand tools and power tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • All forms of communication are a requirement of this position, including verbal, written, and electronic. This communication shall include peer to peer, peer to supervisor, and peer to customer.
  • Must live within 60 minutes of the intersection of First and Main streets per google maps during normal traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates collection vehicles
  • Screens questionable material placed out for pickup and determines unsuitable items
  • Performs daily pre- and post-operation checks on vehicle
  • Performs minor maintenance on division vehicles, waste bins, and receptacles
  • Washes carts and bins as needed
  • Completes related customer service tasks including service starts/stops, replacement of unserviceable containers, distribution of educational literature, etc.
  • May handle or process hazardous materials including refrigerant reclamation
  • Cooperates with the public along the collection route
  • Advises supervisor on relevant issues
  • Work additional hours outside of normal schedule in the event of a storm or at the request of another division
  • Responsible for vehicle care, general maintenance tasks (such as greasing equipment), and cleaning all equipment interior and exterior
  • Provides field training to peers
  • May aid in the removal and treatment of snow and ice
  • May perform some street and alley maintenance duties
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required
