About The Position

Band Saw Operator Position Summary We are seeking a dependable Band Saw Operator to safely and efficiently cut hot rolled structural steel material to specification. This role is responsible for machine setup, material verification, safe loading and unloading, cut quality, part identification, and daily equipment housekeeping. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with structural steel, shop drawings, and material handling equipment.

Requirements

  • Experience operating a band saw or similar fabrication equipment in a manufacturing or structural steel environment preferred
  • Ability to read and follow shop drawings, cut lists, and work instructions
  • Basic understanding of saw setup, blade speed, feed rate, and coolant use
  • Ability to inspect equipment and recognize signs of blade wear, vibration, or cutting problems
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cut accuracy and traceability
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and wear required PPE at all times
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the shift
  • Ability to work around heavy structural steel material, moving equipment, coolant, and metal chips
  • Ability to lift, guide, and position materials safely using proper lifting methods and mechanical assistance
  • Ability to work in a fabrication shop environment with noise, heat, and moving machinery

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using cranes or other lifting devices is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Operate a structural steel band saw to cut material accurately and safely according to shop drawings and cut lists
  • Perform pre-operation checks on the machine and surrounding work area, including blade condition, blade tension, coolant system, emergency stop access, and clamp function
  • Verify material type, cut location, angle, and heat numbers before processing
  • Set saw angle, blade speed, and feed rate based on material type and job requirements
  • Safely load and position structural steel using proper lifting methods and crane assistance when required
  • Align material and secure it firmly in vises or clamps before cutting
  • Monitor cuts for vibration, heat, blade wear, and unusual noise, making adjustments as needed
  • Label finished material with required job information, including length, operator initials, job number, part number, and heat number
  • Remove finished pieces and drops safely and stack material in designated areas
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area by removing metal chips, cleaning coolant spills, and eliminating trip hazards
  • Record completed cuts and material usage accurately
  • Report equipment issues, blade problems, or unsafe conditions to the Foreman or Supervisor
