About The Position

Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program. The School Counselor is primarily responsible to the Principal of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) for providing a comprehensive school counseling program for a K-12 setting at GMS. Duties include group counseling, individual counseling, educational placement in school and after graduation, testing program, group guidance/referral as needed, participation in IEPs and team meetings as needed, and coordination with parents and community agencies, and to help the students develop to their fullest potential. In addition, this position assists with the school’s testing programs in coordination with administrators and instructional coach. This is a 12-month position.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development, including academic, career, social/emotional domains
  • Demonstrate skills in delivery of individual and group counseling theories and techniques, including crisis response and trauma-informed practices
  • Demonstrate knowledge of exceptional children’s services
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures related to Student Services
  • Friendly and able to interact professionally and positively with staff, students, parents, and community members
  • Ability to multi-task giving priority to the most important duties
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong technology skills including use of PowerSchool, Excel, Word, email, text, phone, and other common workplace applications or tools.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: counseling, education, social work, psychology, sociology, human development, or related field.
  • Master’s degree in counseling
  • Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina professional educator's license with licensure in School Counseling

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree representing intensive coursework in the principles and practices of educational guidance, educational testing and measurement, counseling, the organization and administration of the school counseling program, and the psychology of learning
  • Possess a valid North Carolina school counselor license
  • Previous work experience in a school setting
  • Previous counseling experience with children
  • Previous experience working with exceptional children

Responsibilities

  • Follow all School Board Policies
  • Communicates the goals and services of the school’s comprehensive counseling program with families, school, and community
  • Counsels students, individually and in groups, on personal/social growth, academic success, and career awareness
  • Assists students with academic program planning, including class scheduling
  • Assists with class placement for new students and orientation for students and parents
  • Assists students in exploring post-high school opportunities
  • Refers students, parents, and teachers to school system and community resources
  • Prepares and distributes appropriate student services information to staff
  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions
  • Facilitate school initiatives that promote positive behavior systems
  • Consults with teachers, parents, and administrators on the needs of individual students
  • Serve on the student behavior team
  • Shares student data with staff and parents
  • Initiates and/or participates in parent-student-teacher conferences
  • Assists with standardized testing program
  • Assists with End of Grade and End of Course testing
  • Interprets test results and cumulative records to students, parents, and staff
  • Coordinates the preparation of students’ transcripts and writes recommendations for post-secondary admissions, special awards, summer programs, and prospective employment
  • Assists with the school’s summer programming
  • Informs students of their course and credit standing at appropriate intervals
  • Provides input to school curriculum planning
  • Provides in-service training for teachers as needed
  • Participates in professional development activities
  • Collaborates for the safe, caring, and effective operation of the school
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student, parent, and staff information
  • Provides intervention strategies to teachers
  • Adheres to the ethical standards of the school counseling profession
