About The Position

The School Nurse provides primary health services, emergency care, and health promotion for students in grades 9-12 and staff. This role is central to fostering a healthy and safe community, ensuring immediate and ongoing health needs are met, and serving as a vital health resource for the entire school community. The evening shift for this position is on Sunday from 7-10pm and Monday - Thursday from 2-10pm.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited practical/vocational nursing or Registered Nursing program.
  • Valid state (District of Columbia) LPN/LVN or RN license.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification (CPR/First Aid).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Successful completion of a physical screening

Responsibilities

  • Administer daily medications and treatments as prescribed, including preparing medications for school outings.
  • Provide immediate care for student accidents and emergencies.
  • Develop and implement individualized health care plans and modifications for students with special health care needs, including those with 504 plans and IEPs.
  • Document all health encounters, including daily sick visits, medication administration, and incidents.
  • Serve as the primary medical responder during health-related emergencies, coordinating care and initiating appropriate medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with school administration, local emergency services, and other relevant personnel to develop, implement, and routinely review the school's emergency medical response plan.
  • Ensure the readiness of emergency medical supplies and equipment, including AEDs, first aid kits, and emergency medications, in accessible locations throughout the campus.
  • Participate in school-wide emergency drills and exercises, providing expertise on medical response procedures.
  • Review, evaluate, and assess school health services to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  • Manage mandated school screening programs and oversee school/sports physical documentation and follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential cumulative health records, including immunizations, asthma action plans, and anaphylaxis plans.
  • Coordinate school health services, including managing the health suite, organizing annual health fairs, creating informative health bulletin boards, and ensuring adequate supplies.
  • Inform families of annual health requirements as indicated by the DC Department of Health.
  • Monitor the school environment and recommend changes to promote optimal health and safety for all students and staff.
  • Follow communicable disease control procedures, informing administration and parents/guardians regarding school exclusion, exceptions, and readmission.
  • Report suspected child physical/sexual abuse and neglect to Child and Family Services as mandated.
  • Provide annual staff training on essential health topics, such as epinephrine administration.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the home, medical community, and the school regarding student health concerns.
  • Act as a health resource for students, families, school staff, the public charter school board, and community partners.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships, particularly with federally qualified health centers, to enhance student access to healthcare.
  • Maintain continuing education and professional development as it relates to school nursing best practices and current health guidelines.
