About The Position

Pharos Academy Charter School is looking for a Community Associate (School Support Specialist) who is an “uber” kid person. The ideal candidate absolutely loves to support students both academically as well as behaviorally. There is an understanding that messing up and failure is a natural and welcomed part of the learning process. Pharos Academy embraces a restorative approach to discipline and believes that family and community partnerships are crucial. Community Associate Core Responsibilities: The community associate works closely with the Dean of Students to provide support to scholars and classroom teachers. In this role, you are responsible for providing behavioral support to students, ensuring students are on task and that the behavior expectations are implemented in a consistent, caring and disciplined manner. Additionally, the community associate will: Provide 1:1, small group, and whole class assistance as needed to scholars Attend and participate in culture team meetings and professional development Community Associate Core Competencies: The ability to create a school environment where students feel safe, supported, and challenged Strong classroom management skills Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals Growth mindset and ability to use feedback to improve practice Commitment to being a team player (crew member) and belief in Pharos Academy’s core beliefs and educational viewpoint.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required, at minimum.
  • The ability to create a school environment where students feel safe, supported, and challenged
  • Strong classroom management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree in Childhood Education or Child Development related field of study a plus
  • Experience working with school-aged children in an academic or youth development setting
  • Passion and commitment to teaching scholars in the Bronx and to closing the achievement gap
  • Experience teaching or working with students in underserved areas preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom management support
  • Help monitor uniform compliance each morning
  • Provide lunch and recess support, ensuring a safe environment for all scholars
  • Support with morning entry, dismissal, and bus scholars.
  • Support with scholars who are referred out of the classroom
  • Record all behavior-related data & report behavior referrals to school administrators
  • Provide 1:1, small group, and whole class assistance as needed to scholars
  • Attend and participate in culture team meetings and professional development
