GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION: Under the direct supervision of the Biology or related science Program Chair or designee, the science lab tech will be responsible for the general upkeep of assigned laboratory facilities and will support and assist science faculty in setting up and taking down labs. Science lab technicians provide direct technical support to science faculty within the facilities or in the field, carrying out risk assessments and maintaining the teaching laboratories to reliably deliver science education experiences. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: ●Provide general technical support for the science teaching faculty. ●Prepare apparatus, materials and solutions as directed by science faculty and/or Department Chair. ●Execute trial runs of teaching laboratories when requested to insure performance. ●Set up, check and issue equipment and apparatus for use in practical lessons. ●Construct and modify apparatus as required by the faculty. ●Retrieve, clear away, and clean apparatus and equipment and sanitize surfaces as required. ●Maintain clean laboratory, prep room and stock room spaces. ●Sanitize surfaces as required after laboratory use and maintain a program of environmental monitoring. ●Dispose of waste laboratory materials including chemicals, microbiological waste, and animal waste in accordance with Health and Safety requirements. ●Carry out routine maintenance of equipment, in-house repairs, calibration and notify the chair of the need for contractors if external repairs are required. ●Manage the deliveries of supplies, routing packing slips and managing a rotating inventory. ●Assist with the establishment and maintenance of Science Department resources. ●Liaise with teaching staff or otherwise assist with the development of apparatus and equipment for use in practical activities. ●Develop new systems in the laboratories and prep rooms to improve the technical support as needed. ●Liaison with faculty and staff in other schools as required. ●Ensure laboratory security. ●Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations and practice. ●Maintain an up-to-date database of chemicals, equipment and supplies, and course laboratory exercises Manage lab inventory of supplies and equipment and account for losses. ●Maintain lab documentation systems including organization of work sheets, filing, hazard data, legal records, and risk assessments. ●Any other duty commensurate with the position as requested by the Science Department Chair or Ivy Tech science teaching faculty.
