Seasonal Highway Laborer
About The Position
Performs manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and bridges. Performs related work as assigned. Work is performed in the field. Most of these positions are only filled in the summertime through various work programs. An employee in this class performs assignments with little latitude for independent judgment. Assignments are checked for adherence to instructions and adequacy of performance. Wrong actions are usually discovered before serious consequences can develop. Work is performed under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Superintendent.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a driver’s license.
- Ability to perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of the techniques used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and drainage facilities.
- Knowledge of County road system.
- Ability to do continuous heavy work requiring lifting, bending, and carrying.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
- Ability to maintain a regular and timely work attendance.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in operation of light equipment.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of equipment.
Responsibilities
- Performs labor work in the construction, repair and maintenance of road surfaces, shoulders, slopes, and ditches.
- Assisting with the installation and replacement of highway culverts.
- Assist with sign installation.
- Traffic control flagging duties for roadway maintenance work zones.
- Weed and brush clearing along countywide roadsides.
- May serve as a member of a survey crew.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
