About The Position

The Seasonal Life Support Systems Assistant is a member of the PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center who primarily works in collaboration with the Facilities Manager to maintain excellent water quality through daily maintenance and monitoring of life support systems for animal care pools. As time allows, they assist wildlife rehabilitators with direct animal care and volunteer training with a strong focus on aquatic patients.

Requirements

  • Highschool degree or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of three months experience in an aquatic care facility is preferred but not required
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses and auto insurance with required coverage limits.
  • Attention to detail: Accuracy in data collection and record-keeping is crucial and ability to use computer systems.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to identify and address issues with life support systems.
  • Communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse colleagues and animal care staff verbally and through writing.
  • Multi-tasking skills: Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and calmly under stressful conditions; handle multiple responsibilities; and work cooperatively with co-workers (volunteers, interns, and staff), and the public.
  • Basic understanding of aquatic life support systems helpful: Knowledge of filtration, water chemistry, and other related concepts preferred but not required. All training is provided.
  • Mechanical aptitude: Ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment is helpful.
  • Safety awareness: Understanding safety protocols and procedures related to working with equipment and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, push, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch and other moderately strenuous activities.
  • Daily lifting of a minimum of forty (40) pounds. Lifting heavier weights with the assistance of other staff.
  • Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time, including working at a computer.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Exposure to noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, animal hair/dander, parasites, urine, feces, and transmittable disease due to equipment and animals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and Maintaining Water Quality: Regularly test water chemistry parameters, monitor, change filters and clean filtration systems twice daily and as needed, and adjust water parameters as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on pumps, filters, plumbing, and other life support equipment twice daily per shift, and as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Identify malfunctions in life support systems, collaborating with Facility manager when necessary.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Maintain records of water quality tests, maintenance activities, and system performance, generating reports as required and help set up organized reporting systems.
  • Habitat Maintenance: Assist in cleaning, vacuuming and maintaining animal habitats, removing debris and ensuring optimal conditions for animals.
  • Collaboration with Animal Care Teams: Work closely with rehabilitators and other animal care personnel to ensure the health and well-being of patients.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, including those related to ozone generation, other hazardous materials, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Training and Mentoring: Assist in training and mentoring seasonals and interns on life support systems operations and maintenance as needed.
  • Assists in fulfilling daily care plans of wildlife patients including but not limited to nutritional, husbandry, and medical needs.
  • Maintains animal care records and inputs data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
