About The Position

At the Chief Joseph Hatchery, this position serves as an entry level technician for assisting with the fish marking program. This position assists in the loading, clipping, and tagging of juvenile fish for the hatcheries production groups

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED, 6 months related experience and satisfactory work history
  • Fish marking programs, clipping fins
  • Principles and procedures of common hatchery practices
  • Data collection protocol
  • Fish culture methods and techniques
  • Adult salmon identification, handling and spawning.
  • Basic math
  • Use small scissors with precision, standard field equipment
  • Collect biological data from fish (weight, length, gender, origin, etc.)
  • Monitor conditions or artificial rearing environments
  • Complete work assignments
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Perform a variety of outdoor work in inclement weather
  • Establish successful working relations with others
  • Must be in good physical condition to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions and over variable and rugged terrain.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and have good hand/eye coordination.
  • Must be able to swim and work safely on boats, docks, and catwalks around swift moving cold water.
  • Must be able to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, holidays and weekend as the work dictates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License and be eligible for the Tribes
  • This position may require heavy lifting, pulling, and hauling in all kinds of weather conditions on variable terrain.

  • Must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Work history must reflect solid performance and no serious performance, attendance or other disciplinary issues with any employer over the previous year. Verification of past performance will be accomplished by reference checks.

  • Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
