About The Position

A fantastic summer job and great opportunity is available for candidates wishing to sample a career in park and street maintenance. The Seasonal Public Works Laborer performs maintenance operations on the City's park properties and operates light equipment, such as mowers and weed whips. You will gain experience in maintenance of grounds, parks, athletic facilities, streets, and trails as well as management of natural resources. This is a 40 hours per week position. Possible opportunity for additional hours as well. Candidates must be at least 16 years old, high school student, graduate or equivalent, and must have a valid driver's license and good driving record if 18 years of age or older. If you are in high school or college, this position will begin after the end of your school year. The expected starting pay is $18.00 per hour. (The 2026 salary range for this position is $18-$24 per hour). Seasonal and part-time employees performing work for at least 80 hours in a year for the City are eligible for Earned Safe and Sick Time (ESST). ESST is paid at the same hourly rate that an employee is paid from employment with the City. ESST will accrue at a rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours of ESST per year. Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow applicable OSHA standards and departmental safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical labor.
  • Ability to operate small trucks (if over 18 years of age) and park maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work as a member of team or individually on assigned projects; complete assigned duties in a productive and efficient manner.
  • Sixteen (16) years of age.
  • High school graduate or equivalent or current high school student.
  • If 18 years or older, must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the use of grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Experience in the use of light maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance activities.
  • Maintains beaches, grounds, parks, and athletic facilities using manual labor and grounds maintenance equipment such as weed whips, power mowers, or tractor mowers.
  • Under supervision, conducts natural resource management practices, which may include invasive species removal, spot herbicide treatments, seed collection and dispersal, habitat restoration, forest health management, and hazardous tree assessment.
  • Works on a crew to conduct crack filling, pothole patching, paint striping, sign installation, and right-of-way vegetation maintenance.
  • Performs other essential job duties.
  • Regular and timely work attendance.
  • Follows all safety procedures.
  • Participates in safety training.
